A story has me by the throat. The last three nights I've been awake in the middle of the night thinking about it, and there's getting to be quite a bit of flesh on the story's bones. At some point I might actually understand the MMC.

I'm trying to finish off the last chapter of my only series, but it seems like every time I start thinking about it (right now, for instance), Renee takes over and finds a new way to tighten the screws on Aaron.

The first fishing trip of the year, this morning. It was not cold but cold enough for a coat and gloves. There was no wind to speak of. The water temp is still on the cold side but.... I teased eleven crappie into biting. Six were legal keepers. None were in shallow water yet. Four were around six feet deep and the rest were in the twelve to fifteen foot range.

Fish are cleaned and in the fridge awaiting suppertime. Fresh coffee is available for the lunch crowd.

I'm headed for a nap.

Fishing (Angling?) is in a bit of a quandary round here. Government Rules are not too clear, but the Close Season approaches so it's not that vital.

But it is cold this evening and a long & decent Brew is indicated.

I've been limping around all day because my left ankle hurts. I haven't done my daily walks since November, but I started back to it on Thursday. Everything was fine until I woke up this morning. It's likely to feel better tomorrow.

No closed seasons here, HP.

The fish were delicious, as were the hush puppies. I'm pretty much stuffed.

Fresh coffee for the evening crowd.

Twelve hours without a post? Is there something wrong with the coffee?

I'll make a fresh pot and see if that helps.

I guess the problems with votes and views is taking everyone's attention.

Now back to the current album playing. "The Sounds of Silence" by Sandy Nelson.

Site bugs, gardening, aquarium care, trying to write and not succeeding. It's all wrapped up together.

I can get stuck by such stupid things. What do they give each other for Christmas?

Asking random questions gets you random answers. Did you know that Maya Rudolph was Minnie Rippertons' daughter? I didn't.

I'd have to Google both of those to have any idea what or rather who you are talking about.

Maya Rudolph was on Saturday Night Live for several years, and I always thought she looked hot. Her mom had an eight-octave vocal range (at least some of which she handed down to her daughter), and several hits in Jazz, Soul, Rhythm and Blues.

Sigh. Eight months on Lit, and I'm yet to publish my first story. On the other hand, at least I didn't get sucked into the votes and views turmoil.

Fortunately, publishing a story isn't a requirement for posting here. But work on it, and then you can get into the votes/views turmoil. Or not.

Are you still under snow?

We ain't seen snow for a while, but it's not too warm anyway.
What's needed is the coffee.

And it’s been eight months since I published a story. It happens. Mind you, I’ve written bits and pieces of several, and have one almost ready to go, but I could have said the same thing two months back.

Votes and views? I try not to obsess about either, with erratic success. I’m not certain it’s entirely possible not to care, at least a little. And some of the stories I’m proudest of hover below that magical red ‘H’ level, while others I wasn’t as pleased with did far better - it makes me question whether it’s my judgement or the readers’ that’s at fault.

But at the end of the day, barring a handful none of us here are earning a living from our writing - we’re writing for our own enjoyment, first and foremost. External validation is nice, and welcome when it comes, but the important question is: Are you enjoying the process? As long as you are, just hang and keep plugging away.

And when your first story does go live a mention here will likely gain you some sympathetic eyes.

We've had a lot melt, or rather sublimate as it does around here. But we're getting some fresh today. Nature loves reminding us who's in charge.

And Maya was in a 90's band called the Rentals.

Adding this to my list of obscure former bands of famous people.

I'm not the only one with a couple dozen short stories in various stages of completion? Certainly, anything going out for publication needs polishing. But there's no excuse for all the half-finished erotica that could be online now, were it not for my own ego.

Pre-thanks for boosting my view count. In the meantime, I fixed the afternoon coffee.

I've been stalled on the last chapter of the series I'm trying to kill off--I mean finish--for a few days now as I figure out what the main characters give each other for Christmas. That's the last scene in the story. They have to buy them first, and that's the scene I'm working on.

I think I have it now. They will be spider-themed gifts, but they won't know why until after they buy them.

Figuring out the details to make the ending work is a real problem some times. Glad you found your answer NW.

Fresh coffee for the evening crowd.

Most can't pull their eyes away from the votes and views so I'll make it strong enough to keep their eyes from glassing over.

I'm not real concerned about the problem with views, but views are one of the main things that people (including me) use to justify their writing effort. I figure they can get that fixed.

As far as I'm concerned, the site is dead in the water until they fix the problem with votes. I can't even read a story without damaging somebody's result. I'm sure as hell not going to publish anything.

Nah, we've pulled out the whips and cattle prods to try and get the system working again.

Not sure if Manu likes that or not, but it's worth a try.

I hope that will be the last block. The last chapter is all denouement. The main antagonist is dead by suicide, the question of "why" has already been answered, the question of "how can this go on" has been in the air for a while. Even the last sex scene is denouement. I just want to put a Lit page plus into wrapping things up so readers are less likely to beg for more.

Then I want my life back.

He might like that more if Laurel were wielding the whips and cattle prods.
