Burger King’s campaign for International Women’s Day backfired Monday as its attempt to draw attention to the male-dominated culinary world was criticized for sexism.

“Women belong in the kitchen,” the burger chain’s United Kingdom social media channel tweeted.

The restaurant followed up that tweet, which has since been retweeted and quote tweeted more than 250,000 times, with a subsequent message, “if they want to, of course.”

“Yet only 20% of chefs are women. We're on a mission to change the gender ratio in the restaurant industry by empowering female employees with the opportunity to pursue a culinary career,” it wrote. The brand then announced it would be launching a scholarship that will ”help female Burger King employees pursue their culinary dreams!”

The first tweet was no accident. The brand also took out a full-page ad in The New York Times, with the same message. “Women belong in the kitchen” was in giant letters; the further context was in small print below.

Like Women would read beyond that Headline?

The first post was well-timed satire which I would defend 100%. The proper response is "I see what you did there." Anything besides that is alarmist garbage.

People need to learn to pick their battles better.

Yep. This kind of shit is dumb and makes the sane people look hysterical as a group.

I took a closer look- most of the reaction is fake outrage. NBC: "Outrage was swift, even from competitors." (Wow - you mean their competitors wanted them to look bad?)

Another guy said, along these lines: "They had an opportunity to go with 'Burger Queen' instead, but..." (Um, no they didn't - because that's lame and not clever.)

Is 4 a racist answer to 2 + 2 ?

Is an expectation to turn up for work on time regularly or meet deadlines, etc, white supremacy?

It's a misstep but hardly incendiary.

Total and absolute misogyny on display here.

Like their good comrade Rob I'm sure racial slurs are just around the triggered corner for these incel woman haters.

I haven't eaten at a Burger King for years. The whopper jr was pretty decent. Everything smelled the same though.

Am I missing something? Were BK being ironic comparing meat slabs on foam bread to the word culinary? It's worse than calling Fifty Shades a great novel. As for the original campaign strap 'Ho. Ho. Ho.' So much to celebrate but all they can manage is something to buy themselves air time and free tweets.

You're giving BK a pass on their clear and irrefutable hatred of women.

That makes you a misogynist.

You two completely missed the point. By miles.

THEY were the ones pointing out the lack of female chefs - in the first tweet, schmucks got upset so they had to explain it.

So??

They did it in the most misogynistic way possible....and you backed it.

Schmucks?? You mean people who don't think women belong in the kitchen??

LOL

You can't go all not-woke suddenly Luk......that would make you a Trumpster. :D

Nope. Still don't get it. Chefs don't work in BK, factory workers and low paid counter staff work for them. Maybe women have more sense than take shit paid jobs in a grease-bucket environment?

Like I said. You missed the point by miles.
