Average rating changes with same number of people rating

The rating of some of my stories has changed (blissfully for the best), even if the number of rating people remains the same.
How's that possible?
Just curious...

System sweeping and people voting as people's votes, as determined invalid by the system, get erased, all going on when you aren't catching each and every vote and vote eraser.

Dodgy scores get swept out on a regular basis, and in the meantime the same number of people have given you a higher score. It's all part of the site's anti-trolling mechanics. We call them "sweeps" - they happen regularly, more frequently during contests.

It's my opinion that the day-to-day changes in the votes/rating are jiggered to make them difficult to understand. The site owners don't want you to know the distribution of the votes your story has received.

I don't the site owners give two figs about the authors knowing the vote distribution or not. I think it was just something that wasn't put into the system to begin with and isn't easy to reconfigure for now and, again, that the site owners don't give two figs about the authors knowing the vote distribution--that they have no intention in not providing this information.

If you track your scores it's easy to figure out exactly what has happened with your scores. It's just multiplication, addition, and averages. There's no mystery behind the maths. There may be more mystery behind the removals, but with a little more thought, they're easy to understand as well.

The simple answer is that stories are constantly getting new votes from new readers, and occasionally they lose votes through the sweeps that the Site does, which are intended to knock out "invalid" votes, whatever that means according to the Site owners.

So it's possible that you could, simultaneously, get a new vote that's a 5, and have a 1 knocked out by a sweep. The vote total won't change, but your score will go up.

I think occasionally somebody changes their vote too. I have so few stories and get so few votes, I might see 1 or 2 votes on a story in a week, which means I can get a pretty accurate idea of what's going on. On more than one occasion, I've seen the rating change on the same number of votes within less than an hour, when there hasn't been a vote in days.

The change might work out to 2 stars say, so it would have meant a 1 star swept and a 3 added, or a 3 swept and a 5 added, for instance, both of which are highly unlikely.

The chance of there having been a sweep on that story and one or more votes within such a short time seems highly improbable, particularly since I've seen it happen a number of times.

If a vote can be changed (and there's evidence it now can be) that is a very recent, unannounced change in the system.

All five of my stories were bombed earlier this week, presumably by the same individual who commented on all five a few hours later (negative viewpoint and inaccurate observations in the first prompted me to ignore the other four). This evening I noticed all five 1-bombs had been removed, and the previous averages had returned (except one which went up because it had since received a "5" from another reader).

This. If you don't have a lot of votes, this seems very plausible to me.

KeithD pointed out the other possibility just a few posts up the thread. There's evidence now that voters can change their votes, and that can produce a change in the rating without a change in the number of votes.

I had that happen on one of my stories today. It had been getting about a vote/month, so it doesn't seem very likely that I'd get a sweep and a vote within the fairly small amount of time between when I check the scores. The score dropped by 0.02 without a change in votes, and that would be consistent with someone who'd previously voted on the story going back and voting again, but one star lower.

Drastically Reduced Votes

I had a story go from a 4.7 to a 4.19 in a month. I've never had a story drop that drastically before! I notice I had 21 votes on it a week ago which bumped it to 4.44, then today it's down to 17 and back to 4.19. I have no idea what's happening, all I know is it seems fishy that I lose votes so quickly in a month and so sharply. I lost the "H" badge and now my readership has slowed. I'm super discouraged by this outcome to the point that my writing the next part has been difficult. Has anyone else experienced a loss of votes so drastically before? Is this up and down normal for the site?

There's been a glitch in the system. See this thread:
