I have been contacting various editors via the VE program page, but I have yet to receive any responses. I thought that I would see if anyone here could help me out.

I have been posting stories on Lit for about 8 months now, and just finished up the 8th chapter in my series. I would love to find someone to help me clean up the stray grammatical errors that I am missing with my own proofreading.

Feel free to check out some of my previous chapters.

Thank you!

Usually people would like a little synopsis. What is it about? Category?

For those of you that do not want to check out any of the previous seven chapters posted to my profile:

The series dips in and out of several different categories, but has an underlying mind control theme. It is centered around a high school senior boy and his adventures. He is new to his abilities and finds some help in developing them along the way.

I am only planning on a couple more installments of this series (I was planning 10, but might need one or two more to fill it out), and have several other story ideas lined up that also have a wide range for their categories. In general I would like someone that is comfortable editing in multiple categories (although I do not get into anything too extreme).

I can't see a link to anything. You need to create a link to your stories as the message board does not link to your author profile on Lit.

How have you approached VEs? I get back to people 99% of the time, however if they send me a 'Hey, can you edit some of my multi-chapter works pls?' I will put it on the backburner. If they send a 'Hi there, I have written some multi-chapter stories based around BDSM and non-con with some LW and first time thrown in for good measure, each chapter is around 3,000 words and I am looking for someone who can check on punctuation, flow and sentence structure.' then I am more likely to reply quickly.

Edited to add: If you used the tone of the first sentence in any correspondence to me I would refuse to edit outright. I do it on a voluntary basis and do not deal well with rude people.

I’ve not had any luck through that process. I tried for months for my second story, and never even got a “no”. However, posting on here with specifics of exactly what service I’m looking for, a brief description, and an approximate word count has yielded consistent results.

Also, two times that I have offered to beta read or edit, the person offered to read over something for me. So there is a bit of “give a little get a little” around here.

I did not mean to be rude, it was just frustration from the lack of constructive feedback in the first comment. I had thought that I had linked to my stories, but I see now that I had not.

To answer your question, when I emailed the VEs I gave them a brief outline of what the story was and provided a link to the previous chapters. I also said, as I did here, that I was looking for help catching grammatical errors.

Not a single one has emailed me back over the last 3 months of trying.

For your and anyone else’s information, the VE listing never really worked as designed. It relies on posters keeping their profile up to date. So many register to edit, realise it’s not for them, but don’t remove their profile from the list. The best option is to look at the sticky post in this thread, which gives an indication of who may be available, or as you have since done, post a request here. No guarantees though. Unfortunately I have a heavy load at the moment, so can’t help you.

Thank you for the informative feedback.

It is a shame that there is no way to search for active and available editors on there. I used the tool to organize by "Last Activity," but that did not seem to help.

It also does not help that you can only contact a few editors at a time. I get why they don't want people spamming a bunch of editors, but if the response rate is so low then it just makes for a frustrating process.
