as a part of their drive to become carbon neutral by 2040

General Motors said Thursday that it would phase out petroleum-powered cars and trucks and sell only vehicles that have zero tailpipe emissions by 2035, a seismic shift by one of the world’s largest automakers that makes billions of dollars today from gas-guzzling pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles.

The announcement is likely to put pressure on automakers around the world to make similar commitments.
times, they are a changing :)

jobs lost in one sector will be made up by the take off of jobs in the blossoming areas of batteries & charging stations

The Canadian province of Quebec said on Monday it will ban the sale of new gasoline-powered passenger cars from 2035, joining California and others in announcing moves to shift to electric vehicles and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

I think it may be premature and overly ambitions. In principle the idea seems attractive, but, wouldnt it be preferable to come up with alternative fuels? Synthetic petroleum that could be produced and manufactured cheaply, that would burn cleaner? Or CO2 scrubbing technology that would remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere? I'd rather see those technologies employed than electric vehicles. Because who wants to sit for an hour waiting for your car to be charged on road trips?

I just don't like electric vehicles. They are just so soulless. Plus the range anxiety and the long charging times. Lets work on alternative, cleaner burning and more easily produced fuels before making such a commitment.

Five years ago...the righties here said this would never happen.
How can they always be wrong?

.
The latest worst case scenario reports on ice melt and shifting rain belts might have something to do with these announcements.

Fortunately, business relies heavily on science, and I'm guessing they KNOW climate change isn't a hoax.

With ranges now reaching 400 miles and more, range anxiety isn’t a large issue. Charging times are coming down. You charge at home and wake up with a “full tank” without ever having to wait while charging, unless on a road trip. If you drive a Tesla, charging time on road trips is more in the area of 1/2 hour and charging stations are everywhere. Breakfast, lunch and dinner on road trip the car is done charging before you’re done eating. Yes, it ultimately will take a little longer get to reach your destination, but you’ll feel far more relaxed when you get there. Finally, pretty much the only maintenance required is inflating the tires and replacing the wipers.

The only electric vehicle this crowd will need by then is a Hoverround...or electric hearse. :)

Any thoughts with respect to either hydrogen in an internal combustion engine or the use of hydrogen fuel cells?

So in 2035 oldschool cars will increase value. Time to invest in some v8 muscle cars and keep them in garage. I will be rich

Well, on a positive side, you'll lose weight walking.

You can chat with your neighbors that lost their jobs and and hope for the continual stimulus checks, trading off changing your mils diapers with Harold should be blossoming. As will the new jobs that will fuel the the O'biden economy. Lawlz!

Plug it in sister.

GM is the acknowledged leader in making poor quality, unreliable cars, so it’ll be fun watching them make a shittier electric.

GM can hope it will still exist then. I see more of a future in bikes and commuter rail.

The current advances with true "solid state" batteries, will be the death nail for any other fuel source argument. With charging time cut by 75% or better, there will be no need for liquid fuel. Some developers have promised, mass manufacturing, by 2024. If current electric vehicles "have no soul", just wait. By 2035, the advanced AI, will have the haters falling in deep, beautiful, loveing relationships with their new soulless vehicle.

^ This. EV naysayers aren't keeping up with the technology. Even the toxicity issue is minimized with the correct solid state technology.

This just in!

In 2021 GM will produce publicity campaigns about electric vehicles that they say they will build a lot of by 2035.

it is not beyond us to come up with a one size fits all boxy delivery vehicle for mail and parcels.

do i see retro fitting my diesel backhoe with a battery pack? no. not right now.

The battery is the easiest part.....
