Do you ever start an erotic story then end up going non-erotic with it?

As I was writing my most recent story I started feeling at various points like it might work better as a non erotic story. Ultimately I felt like it still worked as erotica and that’s what I wrote. But now I kind of feel revisiting the story as a non-erotic or at least less-erotic story and expanding on it. Have you felt this way with any of your stories?

No. But I've had stories go the other way--start out as nonerotic mainstream and becoming erotica--and thus for a different distribution and audience.

Yes. I enjoy playing with characterisations and having the people chatter in my head as their story and the plot unfolds. If the sex becomes part of that story that's fine, I'll roll with it, but not for the sake of it. Feeling obliged to write sex is as about as exciting as your partner looking at their watch during the news on TV and saying "Oh we've just time for a fuck before the soccer final."

Yes - although my younger sister still didn't think that the story was quite appropriate to read to her grandchildren. :D

I've never done this, because I always start a story with a very clear erotic concept in mind and everything I write is organized around that concept. Plus, I don't write nonerotic stories at Literotica, so my mind doesn't go there. It's pretty much focused on the sex, all the time.

After a lot of stories posted to Lit, the sex scenes got a little stale. So I did a couple of non-erotic ones for a change of pace. Best thing I ever did. One of those stories was the beginning of my mainstream career.

Yeah, I've done that. Sometimes a character gets away from me and insists on telling some other story than the one I started out. I find it can cut both ways - what starts as an erotic idea morphs into something non-erotic, sometimes it morphs the other way. That is part of the fun of writing.

I can imagine that. You've written about 8 times as many stories and started over 10 years before I did, though, so I expect I've got a ways to go before I get bored.

It's possible my upcoming Winter Holidays story might fall this way... not totally non-erotic but certainly without much explicit sex.

Many of my stories start from an erotic scene I envision and build from. But a few (about half of the contest/event stories in my sig) built from a non-erotic theme or scene. For those the sex/eroticism was what would build from a natural progression (well, I hope, that was my intent at least.) I've tried to avoid the Caligula model where the plot moves along and... suddenly the scene jumps to a hardcore orgy.
