This is still $5 less than the average price seen under the Obama Administration. Now add in the weak dollar. It makes total sense...China is hedging their bets. But they are buying more from Brazil...almost double what they buy here. Trump decimated the US farm market. There was only a couple choices for farmers...take lower prices. Or store them. This seems to be a pretty complex issue that you have tried to portray as a simple cause and effect. In discourse, this is pretty much a form of fallacy in the form of, I washed my car which caused it to rain.

Here is how complex it is.

1) Trump imposed tariffs.
2) China laughed and said, "We will buy more soybeans from Brazil.
3) The US farmer lost their market share.

China holds all the "trump" cards. How do you get back lost market share? Produce a better product. Well soybeans are soybeans...this will do nothing for the farmer. Or you can sell your product for less than your competitors. The price per bushel means little if your debt outweighs any price offset. That is known as a break-even point.

Our "vast impoverished underclass" lives better lives than most of the world, not to mention, they are not a static class; the United States enjoys economic mobility and no one is relegated/sentenced to a permanent "class." In short, the system is not creating millions of Jean Valjeans. If you end up in jail or in poverty, in the United States, short of mental impairment, it is entirely upon you, not the system.
