To be clear, in this statement I was referring to the 2009 award of the Peace Prize to Obama for "creating a new climate in international politics" even as Yemen fell apart, as he green-lighted the implementation of a force level surge in Afghanistan, and his Administration labeling the legitimate exercise of democratic power in Honduras as a coup d'etat.

These are just the ones I can recall.

Incidentally, the World Food Program was established in 1961. One must assume that it was doing equally good work back in 2009.

It's easy to justify one's logic by devising a group consisting of just me, you, and Obama. When the group consists of human rights activists, including one dragging Islam to the middle ground, and the acknowledged father of democracy in in China, one can only easy see how one's rockstar status can tip the balance.

It was sort of a "Good for you, USA, for electing a black president despite your racist history; it's a great example for the rest of the world." That has genuine value as a message. But it wasn't much about Obama personally.

I thought Obama might use his high profile for some general international do-gooderness as an ex-president, and he hasn't seemed so inclined to this point. But he's still only 59, and the moral authority of having been an American president is not what it used to be given that we're currently the world's most prosperous banana republic.

I wished he had waded hip-deep in the Israel-Gaza issue whilst Prez. AIPAC would have been run out of the country had they gone against him given how popular he was domestically and internationally. The stick to Israel would have been deeper cuts to the foreign aid budget and its impact to IDF spending as a function of sequestration.

Another UN entity, another sex scandal

October 9, 2019: Yet another United Nations entity—this time the World Food Programme (WFP)—is engulfed in a sexual abuse scandal.

A total of 28 respondents to an independent survey of WFP staff members said they “had experienced an act of ‘rape, attempted rape or other sexual assault or rape’ while working at the food agency,” according to an article published yesterday in Foreign Policy.

The survey, which has been cited by both Foreign Policy and The Italian Insider newspaper, found WFP to be a cesspool of harassment, discrimination against women and minorities, abuse of authority, and retaliation. More than 8,000 WFP staff members participated in the survey conducted by an independent management consultancy.*

A total of 641 respondents said they "experienced or witnessed sexual harassment, mostly sexually explicit comments or jokes, but in some cases rape and sexual assault," wrote Foreign Policy. Some 950 staff members said they “experienced or witnessed retaliation for speaking up about abuse practices.”

OSLO (Reuters) - The effect of giving the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Barack Obama fell short of the nominating committee’s hopes, and several awards in the past 25 years were even more questionable, the committee’s former secretary says in a new book.

"Even many of Obama’s supporters thought the prize was a mistake,” Lundestad wrote, adding that many Americans viewed the award as making Obama a spokesman for international peacemaking values rather than their own interests.

“In that sense the committee did not achieve what it hoped for,” he wrote, noting Obama himself rarely mentioned the prize.

I do not believe Obama was deserving of the Nobel. I do believe an organization that feeds people should be.

But the Nobel committee did think Obama was deserving. Why? What did he represent? How was his Administration governed? How did he interact with the International community?
