I’m making a playlist for my oldest who is off to college soon. What are your most essential songs from any genre?

Traveling Riverside Blues - Robert Johnson

Death Letter Blues - Son House

Blue Yodel #9 - Jimmie Rodgers(accompanied by Louis Armstrong)

Wildwood Flower - The Carter Family

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry - Hank William's

Mannish Boy - Muddy Waters

Axis Bold As Love - Jimi Hendrix

Statesboro Blues - Allman Brothers Band from the Fillmore East

The Man In Black- Johnny Cash

Sunday Morning Coming Down - Kris Kristofferson (Though I prefer Cash's version personally)

Essential songs:

Gimme Shelter — Stones
Sultans of Swing — Dire Straits
One — U2
Kind of Blue — Miles Davis
Jessica — Allman Brothers
On the Road Again — Willie Nelson

I could go on but I’ll spare you.

Oops, I Shall be Released, The Band

Oh, some Dylan too.

She's Got You - Patsy Cline

Coal Miners Daughter - Loretta Lynn

Me and Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin

Crazy On You - Heart

Landslide - Fleetwood Mac

Do kids not find "old" music on their own anymore? By the time I was a teenager, I was generally aware of Elvis, Sam Cooke, Hank Williams etc, and I didn't have YouTube as a resource. These viral videos of young folks "discovering" the existence of songs that were on the radio during the Clinton presidency are amusing.

Anyway, let me throw out the collected works of Ray Charles from his time at Atlantic Records. It's the foundation of soul.

I definitely need to add some good old blues songs. My knowledge of country is seriously lacking, but I am making my way through the songs you posted.

Thanks!

Please, go on. These may not have been my first picks from these artists, but certainly essential.

They definitely do, and are exposed to a ton of it through me and my siblings, but I really enjoy making playlists for them. I love them randomly singing some obscure punk song during dinner.

Yes to some Ray Charles and more soul music. Not sure I would have gone there on my own.

My wife makes playlists out the wazoo. Music plays just about all day long at this household.
