Louisiana Supreme Court upholds Black man's life sentence for stealing hedge clippers more than 20 years ago
Thu, 06 Aug 2020 20:40:09 GMT
A sentence handed down to a Black man for stealing a pair of hedge clippers more than two decades ago was upheld by the Louisiana Supreme Court last week....

That sounds crazy. Third strike? Maybe he accidentally killed someone with them as he was running away.

I am confident it was his third offense. If it wasn't clippers...it would have been something else. He made a choice not to change...how many chances does one need? Is it worth the cost of prison? No. But it was his choice.

And people are surprised when riots take place. I think the judge should have to serve a life sentence for being a racist asshole in this case.

I am a lifelong Democrat. Just so you know. And no...I do not support violence to create change. Why stoop to a Republican level?

Armed robbery 1979
Possession of stolen items 1987
Forgery 1989
Burglary of an inhabited dwelling 1992
1997...attempted theft of hedge clippers

Seems habitual to me...

Again...where does one draw the line? Is armed robbery ok? Is possession of stolen items ok? How about forgery? Or burglary? Those are OK right?

Which of these are worth taking a life?

He made his choice. So...you believe he should be released? He has shown no remorse. No positive actions in prison. Ok...why don't you go and tell the Court you will take responsibility for his future actions? if he commits another crime...both of you can go to jail. I am ok with that.

Edit: it is possible he has changed in prison. I just couldn't find someone talking about it in the quick search I did.

this needs looking at hard. there are rich people who've done far far worse, just as often, and received less time

shouldn't each crime be punished at the level it deserves? theft is not rape, or murder, or child abuse, tax evasion, stealing from charities or other, more heinous crimes

did he serve time for each of these crimes? is being handed a 20 year sentence for 'attempted theft of hedge cutters' apropriate?

i suppose the acid test is 'would a white guy have been handed that same sentence in the same circumstances?'
if the answer is yes, then the system is still in need of reviewing to make sentences meet crimes. if no... well.....

What if the government used that $75,000/year to help him improve his life?

I know. Crazy talk.

Life x $xx,xxx per year = a million? Per black man?

Expensive oppression!

When a link is not provided, it is because you're only getting a subset of the story

and in this case it is the white hispanic, hands up don't shoot, I can't breathe
school of agenda and story-telling (about Racism in America in general,
and in this case, in the south specifically. Trivia question:
Which state left the Confederacy first?
)

That is the acid test isn't it? There is always the exception. It isn't the legal system ...but the enforcement system that is the primary issue. Cops treat people differently.

As for the law...each State has the right to make a law. Why should your opinion matter if you don't live there? Do I agree with 3 strikes? No. But it is the law...so enforce the law. I guarantee the Judge told him...if I see you in here again, I will throw the full weight behind the punishment. So who's fault is it he chose to steal hedge clippers?

What is the purpose of prison? What is the deterrent? What makes people decide to change? And where is the line that says enough is enough? This is each community's right to decide

It's just another sad example of why the US has the highest number of inmates in the world .

OJ Simpson has always been something of a role model to you, amirite?

When she got out of line, he put her in her place.

Sleep with one eye open, BotanyGirl! Stay safe!

No, you're not right.

BotanyGirl is an IDF killer, nobody puts her anywhere she doesn't want to be.;)

I expected something completely different when I opened this thread. Carry on.
