because a good rest and/or sleep is important for the body, mind and soul...and good pillows help facilitate this process.

In the market for new pillows. What are y'all resting your head (and maybe body) on when you sleep?

Same here. Using an old spring one from God knows when that probably should be put out to pasture. :D

Was thinking of going the Casper memory foam route, those look nice.

We spent quite a bit of money on a Sleep Number bed. It's the most comfortable sleep I've ever had.

With the exception of the water bed...

Any opinions out there regarding the Dreamcloud?

Tempurpedic pillow, not shaped, but like a regular one but in the memory foam.

Tempurpedic mattress...probably 10-12 years old and still like new.

Two down pillows on top of a curved bolster.

We've had a Sleep Number bed for a few years. I sleep better on one of the guest room beds. Have no idea what that mattress is.

I got this tuft and needle one about four years ago. I'm not sure about mattress life spans but it seems to me that the older style lasted longer.

that third one looks like the epitome of getting mask-wearing wrong

my problem, for every pillow i've ever tried so far is pressure on my ears. some are a lot worse than others, and some very hot. the problem is just laying on my ear for more than an hour (even with a goodish pillow) has me waking enough to turn my head or all of me to relieve that as it gets to hurt. probably why i remember so many dreams! i am a delicate flower, a princess when it comes to peas under mattresses. don't even get me started on crumbs in the bed.

We went with the original Purple mattress.

When I travel I find the memory foam mattresses very comfortable, and quickly fall asleep. However, over the course of the night I find myself sinking deeper into the mattress. Memory foam has great insulation qualities, so it traps body heat. I usually wake up about 5 AM in a sweat, and I'm not a morning person.

I don't have that issue with Purple, which has a hyper-elastic polymer top layer ( imagine a silicone mini ice cube tray ) that lets air circulate, above layers of memory foam.

----

As for pillows- I haven't been happy with anything in recent years. I use an apple core pillow and a My Pillow, usually discarding one part way through the night. Part of my problem is that I tend to roll in my sleep- so the purple pillow doesn't work for me because it doesn't easily adjust height.

Check out the purple mattress. The ads are entertaining.

I'm contemplating the purple mattress. I hear amazing things about their pillows. I really should get me one of those first, I guess.

I went to the Purple site and am checking out their stuff...

...huh. At first glance it looks just like the stuff at Casper, but it's different. Interesting.

i've slept for shit all of my life

they used to tell me it was because i was too skinny and didn't eat enough. now they tell me it's because i only have function in half of my heart. regardless, i took my dr's advice and bought a wedge pillow, a hard block of foam that elevates my upper body. they wanted me to go on a c-pap, which i refused. this has made 100% difference although i do have a stiff neck some times. vodka and gin also help.

do you have an ikea nearby? i went in and asked them what their most solid mattress is. it turned out to be all foam and it rests on a platform rather than box springs. it's the most comfortable mattress i've ever slept on. i've had it for about 5 years and it's still holding up and it only cost a little over $200. when i pitch it, i'll just buy another and not feel any guilt over the cost.

The doctor that birthed both me and my mom, gave me advice one day. I went to him over deplorable acid reflux I was getting in the morning.

He asked me when, and what was I eating.

I was eating (relative to his question) fried foods, soda and coffee and ate up to the hour before I went to sleep.

That's your problem he told me. Fried foods don't leave the stomach that quickly. The grease lines the stomach and causes the acids of the stomach to continue well after the food has passed on. Also, any acidic drink contributes to acid reflux, especially when all three (or any foods) are ingested within the hours before sleep.

I like eating those foods/drink, so is there an alternative?

Yes, the trouble is your stomach fills with acids and undigested matter while the body is reclined. Since the body is gravity motivated, by reclining your body, you stop the stomach contents from moving on like they should. So acids keep building and building to get rid of what the intestines are supposed to finish digesting. The stomach doesn't have a "one-way-valve" to restrict acids from spilling out and up the esophagus, and since the esophagus isn't meant to handle stomach acids on a daily basis, when the acids recede in the morning (when you wake up and stand up), that is when morning acid reflux will hit. (somehow, by the acids receding, causes the body to suddenly react by building up more acids to get rid of the food that isn't in the esophagus).

So, if you're incapable or hesitant to stay seated or standing up prior to going to sleep, you have to incline your upper body.

He indicated with his hands by how much, but I took it to be about 30 degrees.

In that vein, I went out and purchase dozens of pillows that never worked. Then I got the bright idea to purchase the "sex ramp." This (and a diet change) brought my acid reflux to a screeching halt. However, years later I find out (from a different doctor) that inclining the head by too much causes the muscle at the back of the throat/nasal passages to not relax as much as they should, and this is one cause for sleep apnea.

My point is, some people like firm, some like soft, some like to incline their head to ungodsly amounts. Shooting from the hip, but based on what I've learned over the years, you shouldn't have more than two soft pillows, or one firm pillow. Your head shouldn't be raised such that your chin is nearly touching your chest.

Keeping the head cool at night contributes to relaxation, however don't stop there. Those knee foam pillows likewise reduce heat around the groin which contributes to relaxed sleeping. The only thing I would caution against, based on gut feeling alone is that "pillow top foam beds" made me have fibromyalgia for several months, and for several years. I can't point my finger at anything else that could have caused it, and after I purchased a new bed, the fibromyalgia went away.

Some people prefer a body pillow to place between knees and to "cuddle with" (lacking a sleeping partner who they would otherwise do that with).
