Hong Kong was only ever leased to the UK and when the lease expired it had to be handed back. The only options the government had at the time was to make the offer they are now making to the Hong Kong citizens or to agree a deal which would kick the can down the road.

The Thatcher government had already taken British Citizenship rights away from most other ex-colonies and, like every Tory government since, were very sensitive about immigration. They took the easy option and signed a deal that they knew would not be adhered to.

I'm sure the people with money and international connections had their status sorted years ago. I think quite a lot went to Canada. As ever, little people get shafted.

1st statement is WRONG. Part of Hong Kong - the New Territories - were leased to the UK. The main island was a British Colony by conquest BUT Hong Kong was not viable if only the part the British owned was separated from the New Territories.

I've got a new razor here Ogg if you feel like splitting a few more hairs.

Hong Kong was ceded/leased to the UK as part of the settlement to end the first Opium War.

China banned the trade in Opium, the raw material for Heroin because of obvious social problems. Britain invaded China in order to continue having supplies of the drug.

Britain basically won the war and won the port of Hong Kong as a port to export their opiate. How times have changed.

We know. The Opium wars are a stain on our history. The Chinese were selling tea to the UK but wouldn't accept any UK goods to pay for it - only gold or silver. But opium was an export that Chinese people would use - so we Brits supplied it until the Chinese government said - enough!

FFS, Boris has taken up the same practices as Presiderp Trumpie

Why tell the truth, and give The People and The Nation what they need,
when lies and false promises are so much more profitable for those in
power ?

(It is to weep.)

"The Brexiteering prime minister is an unprincipled, opportunistic fabulist and political buffoon" but don't take my word for it - that came from NYmag.com in December 2019, long before Boris the Cunt showed his inability to take his job seriously ( missing 5 briefings on coronavirus in February ) and his lack of principals, by continuing to back his campaign chief Dominic Cummings, despite his flagrant breach of travel restrictions.

England pubs reopen on US Independence Day — after first nationwide closure since 1665’s Great Plague

The streets of Soho filled with merry drinkers in London on Saturday and the pubs of Manchester were packed as England’s hospitality sector returned from a three-month coronavirus hiatus.

“It feels amazing,” said Leo Richard Bill, a soldier, after getting through the door of one of London’s buzziest restaurants on the Thames River’s popular south bank.

Britain’s devolved structure means the pubs of Northern Ireland opened on Friday, while the ones in Wales and Scotland will have to wait for about 10 more days.

The emergency services have also warned the public not to overdo it.
West Yorkshire Police Federation chief Brian Booth said local accident and emergency departments were “akin to a circus full of drunken clowns” before the outbreak.
“We do not need this once again,” he said.

:)

The UK govt has issued guidance on the return to drinking
"From 4th July, people in England can once again visit a pub for a drink, but only for essential drinks. If your drink is essential then you must observe the recommended social distancing, not stand at the bar, don't sit down, except in allocated seating. You are advised not to drink more than two units of alcohol, unless there is a pressing need and even then, not rely on friends or family to support you if you fall over, because that breaches distancing guidelines. Don't touch your face, do not visit the restroom or vomit into the flower arrangements and wear a mask between sips. At 2am there will be a round of applause to thank the underpaid staff for their patience"

Drunk people can’t socially distance, UK police conclude

Britain’s police said Sunday that revellers who packed London’s Soho district the night pubs finally reopened made it “crystal clear” that drunk people cannot socially distance.

England’s hospitality sector sprung back to life after a three-month coronavirus hiatus on what the media dubbed as either “Super Saturday” or “Independence Day”.

Pubs and restaurants were allowed to start seating clients and barbers could get their clippers out for the first time since March.

But the head of Britain’s police federation said he ended up dealing with “naked men, happy drunks, angry drunks, fights and more angry drunks” while on shift.

“What was crystal clear is that drunk people can’t/won’t socially distance,” John Apter told London radio.

:D

On my local beach, despite cars parked everywhere they could, people were socially distanced except in family groups. It helps to have seven miles of coast line and NO sand.

To be fair Ogg, the only interesting stat from your part of the world is how many villages disappear into the sea every year . I hope your concrete is a safe distance

My house is ten metres above the sea. If that goes, so has much of central London.

My brother's first house after he married in 1961 was a hundred yards from a crumbling cliff. That's why they could buy it. It was cheap because it was at risk. He sold it five years later. Now, it is eighty yards from the cliff and no movement has taken place for fifty years.

The US's Eastern seaboard has greater risk for many more people than the UK's crumbling cliffs.

Their east coast will get wiped out by La Palma collapsing, but maybe not for a hundred years or so or maybe tomorrow and they can blame the Dems. Should be a big splash that will reach the UK west coast too. I visited its extinct caldera by mistake because we got the wrong bus.

10m high battlements sound safe enough :D

I'm still puzzled why half of Holland has sea defences but the EA has thrown in the towel in the UK. I don't have enough geology badges to understand

The Dutch have been reclaiming land from the sea for centuries. They are the world experts but the cost is enormous. But they don't build houses on top of unstable cliffs and the land close to the sea is kept as agricultural land, not housing.

Over the twentieth Century in the UK we have built too many coastal homes in vulnerable positions. We cannot protect all of them - the Dutch don't have to because they didn't allow building as we in the UK did. Even so, during the 1953 flood the Dutch lost more lives than we did in the UK.

This is frankly ridiculous. The virus doesn’t know if you’re in a take-away
or a supermarket. The Government is risking the health of the public to cover
the back of a Cabinet Minister.

Please wear a face covering in all shops and take aways.

God's gift to the UK, Michael Gove, is not required to protect lowly commoners from harm

Earlier today Downing Street said -

there would be an exemption on mask use for takeaway purchases,
following pictures yesterday of Michael Gove leaving Pret a Manger
without a face covering.

15 July 2020

On Wednesday morning, in response to a suggestion that the images of Gove and Truss
had sown confusion, Hancock told Sky News:
“This picture was before we’d announced the change in the policy.
I announced that change in the policy in the House of Commons yesterday.”

Asked explicitly if from 24 July somebody would have to wear a mask at Pret a Manger,
Hancock said: “You do need to wear a face mask in Pret because Pret is a shop.”

However, adding to the apparent confusion over the plans, the prime minister’s spokesman
said later on Wednesday: “My understanding is that it wouldn’t be mandatory if you went
in, for example, to a sandwich shop in order to get a takeaway, to wear a face covering
Where it is mandatory we’re talking about supermarkets and other shops.”

Labour has pointed the finger at the government, saying its plans for face masks have
been confusing, with Gove saying on Sunday he did not favour them becoming
mandatory in shops. Government sources later said he had misspoken.

Coronavirus: Number 10 contradicts Health Secretary Matt Hancock on face mask rules
after sandwich shop confusion

The PM's spokesman suggests face masks won't be mandatory in takeaway sandwich
shops - but the health secretary said they would.

15 July 2020

Downing Street has suggested face masks won't be mandatory when buying takeaway
from a sandwich shop - contradicting what Health Secretary Matt Hancock told Sky
News hours earlier.

"If there is table service, then it is not necessary to have a mask," the health secretary said.

"But in any shop you do need the mask. So, if you're going up to the counter in Pret to
buy takeaway, that is a shop - that is Pret operating as a shop.

https://news.sky.com/story/coronavi...-rules-after-sandwich-shop-confusion-12029134

Rules are all over the map, for dining out,in America.

Some cafes and restaurants are extremely cautious.

Some are having a free-for-all pre-coronavirus party, if it is dining alfresco.

The problem is that Dominic Cummings cannot be everywhere so politicians like Hancock don't a;ways know what their opinion is.

The real answer is, whatever the government says, when in doubt wear a mask or follow the rules set by that outlet.

It's been shown that Boris skips meetings and doesn't bother with briefings either, so when there's a disjointed and chaotic leadership, this is what happens. I noticed in town today that 80% of people are ignoring distancing and hardly anyone is wearing a mask in shops. There's no pattern I can see - grey heads ought to be worried but anyone under 30 doesn't seem to give a shit.

That Con MP idiot from the New Forest was funny when he came out as the only dissenter to masks in shops - as if he ever went into one! He'll get his groceries from Fortnum & Mason and his wife buys his shirts. I'm sure his local gunsmith has a boy to deliver shot for the duck season. What a chump

England has screwed up again (not Scotland or Wales that have more accurate data) and the govt has paused the daily count of Covid deaths. If people recover from Cov19 but later die, their death is still currently attributed to the virus. This came to light after a man, possibly the most unlucky person in the UK, died recently:

“A patient who has tested positive, but [was then] successfully treated and discharged from hospital, will still be counted as a Covid death even if they had a heart attack or were run over by a bus three months later,” added Prof Loke and Prof Heneghan.

His coffin has been epoxied and nailed shut just in case.
