I remember growing up that every school day my father would make my sister and I oatmeal for breakfast. Sometimes even putting chocolate syrup in it to make it "fun". I came to hate oatmeal. So I swore as a young adult I would never eat oatmeal again for breakfast. (I absolutely do have to give him credit for making it every school day. That was a very good thing in retrospect.)

Fast forward 30 years and how times have changed.

I have to admit though I am trying to figure out this oatmeal thing. Old fashioned, not the instant ones. No fancy brands just regular old fashioned oats. Cooked in water with the pinch of salt they say to add.

So far I've mixed in fruit, a bit of peanut butter, honey, lemon jelly. I don't want to add plain table sugar. I still need to figure out how to round it out - protein and fat specifically.

How do you do oatmeal?

I don't.

I used to and then I got sick of it. These days, I am not in the mood for a heavy breakfast.

Fresh fruit is good though.

i don't either because it's both heavy and light in the most frustrating way. it fills you up at first, but i always felt hungry again like two hours later. mini wheats don't pull that kinda shit.

also, i mainly just used brown sugar. apparently i like molasses.

and now i want some shoofly pie.

damnit.

The texture is vomit inducing.
I prefer overnight oats. The texture is far more palatable.

Oatmeal is good for you in smaller portions. Too much and you're defeating the purpose. It's also it's own protein. No need to add to it but if you do just use powder. Honey is the better sweetener if you gotta use it. Brown sugar is a nice option altho sugar is sugar.
Downside: Carbs, carbs, carbs and carbs.
Other downside: heavy breakfast is not good for you if you don't also adjust your other meals and watch calories.

I eat steel cut oats cooked overnight. Usually toss in 2 packets of Stevia.

You like oatmeal that's sweetened with ass? Fuckin' stevia is some seriously nasty shit. There's a point where wanting something sweetened stops and wanting something that doesn't gag a maggot starts.

Steel cut is supposed to be better for you but in the end all oatmeal does essentially the same thing and is good for you.

Don't know if its better for you but it tastes better to me than instant oatmeal, which has the consistency of glue to me.

not all carbs are bad carbs. see fiber which oatmeal is full of and is the reason it's recommended.

With oats that pretty much what it comes down to, what you like. I like old fashioned and steel cut but I have no issue with quick oats either. I usually eat a cup a day or sometimes a little more. Heart healthy and gets things moving with the fiber which is nice at my age.

No, they're not all bad and I do enjoy the fiber. However carbs are and always will be the devil so I limit and it has worked wonders for me.

If you mean porridge, I fucking love it. Gotta be Scott's oats not that Quaker crap. With honey and raisins. Sometimes nuts. Thick as fuck, almost a slice of porridge. Sometimes I'll have it as an evening meal.

We cook it plain. Sometimes, if mom does the cooking, she add a bit of milk to it.

Then I eat it with frozen henomele splices (left over from production of syrup, they're more sour than lemon and very hard), whatever fresh berries gathered during morning walk in my garden or forest or if none are available some frozen berries, and of course honey (also from my own bees).

You must be a blast at dinner parties.

I love oatmeal with strawberries, blueberries and nuts mixed in. No milk or liquids. Sometimes with brown sugar and bananas.

If I have it for breakfast, I don’t need anything else until dinner.

Ditto, I never add milk to oatmeal.

My dad grew oats. If you had ever seen how they are stored and the rat droppings and urine puddles, you'd think twice about it. :)

Only thing I cook over night is smoked brisket. Okay it's really just cooked from early morning (as in started around 1am if it's a big one). My oats are pretty simple: boil, simmer, rest, add a little cream and brown sugar.
