Trump's Berman disaster suggests William Barr is not so smart after all

The attorney general lied about the US attorney from New York, had to fire him, and landed the president with a big problem

Maybe Bill Barr isn’t that smart. With less than 150 days to the election, Roy Cohn 2.0 emerged from his scrum with Geoffrey Berman, the US attorney for the southern district of New York (SDNY), looking the worse for wear. In less than 24 hours, Barr placed Donald Trump in more jeopardy than he was when their brawl with Berman began late on Friday night.

Instead of replacing Berman in the near term with a Trump loyalist, the US attorney for New Jersey, and in the long haul with Jay Clayton, the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Audrey Strauss, a career prosecutor, will lead the “sovereign” district until a Trump nominee clears the Senate.

The SDNY, remember, has investigated and prosecuted close allies of the president.

For Trump and his attorney general, replacing Berman with Strauss is like jumping from frying pan to fire. If the dynamic duo had a difficult time taming Berman, a Trump contributor and a former partner of Rudy Giuliani, reining in Strauss will prove even tougher.

At the same time, word is that Giuliani’s business ventures may be receiving a proctological exam from the SDNY, which he led himself before he was New York mayor. For the president and Barr, targeting Giuliani may have been a bridge too far. But now they have to worry about Strauss. Sometimes the devil you know is safer.

Even if Rudy is left untouched, the latest episode will add another coat of mire to Barr’s reputation. Being this president’s stooge comes with a price. Like Rick Wilson says, everything Trump touches dies.

Financial problems plagued Rick Wilson as he became never Trump leader

Rick Wilson?

Never Trump leader Rick Wilson’s hypocrisy is not limited to now attacking those who support the Confederate flag after previously supporting it himself.

Wilson’s The Lincoln Project, a group of Never Trump political consultants running targeted ads attacking Trump this year, has been touting an ad bashing the Confederate flag as a symbol of “treason” against the United States.

“The men who followed this flag 150 years ago knew what it meant,” a narrator says in the ad released earlier this month as a Confederate flag waves in the background. “Treason against their country. The death of the United States. America defeated the men who followed that flag. Those with honor surrendered and cast it aside forever.”

But then some conservatives uncovered social media posts from Wilson and his wife featuring a cooler with a Confederate flag on it as well as the text in one image: “The South Will Rise Again.” Wilson has been feverishly deleting the images from Twitter, and when his wife, Molly—legal name Mary—was confronted by conservative Caleb Hull, she would not deny owning the cooler or disavow the Confederate flag on it. She simply replied “Fuck off” to Hull, per screenshots he posted of his confronting her about it.

Berman wasn't the "U.S. Attorney from NY." he was an interim occupant of the office held by Preet Bharara, President Obama’s appointee, who was fired by Trump. There hasn't been a U.S. Attorney in the SDNY since 2017. Trump did not appoint Berman. It is only natural that Trump would want his own pick in that office. Recall that Bill Clinton fired all 93 of the 94 U.S. Attorneys when he took office.

That's typically mealy-mouthed. He was functioning in the job--just not the way you and Trump and Barr with like him to, apparently.

He wasn't the U.S. Attorney, the real U.S. Attorney was fired by Trump and he hasn't appointed his replacement. The AG appointed an interim temporary place holder. Now, GOFUCKYOURSELF

Who was doing the job, oh Mealy-Mouthed One? Who've been challenged on that already and came up a fail (again, as usual).

How does it feel to be carrying water for a fraud and con man who is killing tens of thousands of Americans needlessly?

I have one fuck to give today. This doesn't look worth a whole fuck, so maybe just a smidgen of a fuck.

Wrong!! A court appointed Berman which meant only Humpty Dumpty could fire him.

Good point. And Clayton, a trump golfing buddy with no prosecutorial experience, is a perfect choice lead such an investigative branch according to Barr, who went on to say that basically innocent things occur but people read more into them than is there. So according to Barr it’s a coincidence that Berman got replaced when things are heating up on Giuliani, what trump said notwithstanding.

Barr also said it’s perfectly normal and just for the AG to supervise and get involved with any and all sort of cases. So it’s simply another coincidence that Barr does so with trump ally cases.
