We could say "our leader sucks communist cock" or make jokes about Germans, Italians or Jews, and people would just laugh.

History is written by those that win. When we find something we don't like or aren't proud of it seems to get pushed off to the side and hopefully falls into the realm of the forgotten. The Japanese omitted many events from WWII that later generations would discover from other countries. I am sure similar events have happened in most countries. Now we are removing these statues and changing any text that discuss these people because it's not politically correct or found to be offensive. Just sweep it under the rug.
