Morning everyone. ☕

Are you a spur of the moment kind of person or prefer everything be planned out to the T?
Would it excite you or give you anxiety if someone said “it’s a long weekend, you’ve got 90mims to pack up. We’re driving 5-6hrs. Now, spin the bottle to see what direction we head.”?
Hello road trip.

Here’s a time to plan and prepare and there’s a time to be like a leaf in the wind. So a spur of the moment long weekend trip to points unknown, be ready in 90 minutes? Sure, that’d be fun and my vehicles are always maintained. People forget that you can always find a place to buy whatever you realize you need while you’re on the road.

For bucket list, I'm with Portobello Belle (cool name btw...great band) and a big ass Moose. Love to catch one of those babies in the wild.

Most recent encounter, an eagle. He was chillin on a branch of a tree about 100 yards away checking me out and looking for food. I was chillin in an adirondack chair with a cocktail, checking him out and hoping a fish would rise soon so I could see him in action.

I live between a golf course and a decent sized state park, so I get to see deer, fox and rabbits on the regular and we have an owl that live in the woods behind my house.

Animals are cool, except cats.

Hello road trip.

I am not a spur of the moment kind of person when it comes to a lot of things. I like to plan ahead, otherwise there’s panic, followed by chaos. But there are times when I wouldn’t be anxious about a road trip. Those impromptu decisions have more often than not turned out to be the most satisfying and thrilling in my experience. I wouldn’t do it all the time though. There needs to be a balance.

Hello road trip.

I want to do this some day. I have family in both Iowa and Tennessee. Some day, I'm going to do that to my daughter. "Jump in. It's time to go"

I love road trips. Always have. Even when my daughter was away at college. I loved jumping in the car and driving the 6ish hours to see her.

I can't drive for as long of distances as I used to after a car accident. My back gets too sore. But I can still do at least 6-8 hours at a time. I also have to be more careful of night time driving in unfamiliar areas because of my Diabetes. My eyes aren't what they used to be. So. I can drive during the day, she can drive at night. Perfect!!!

In general. I'm somewhere in the middle. Some times I like to plan. Some times I like to just do it.

Hello road trip.

Definitely more spur of the moment when I can but your example is maybe slightly out of my comfort zone

I'm more: "Hey, we don't have anything this weekend, right? What would you think about heading to....?" on a Wednesday or Thursday. I have on occasion thrown shit together in an hour and hit the road but it's fairly rare.

A good game of spin the bottle is always in order.
Plans suck. They make you think about weather and toothbrushes.
I like spur of the moment, it’s a lot more fun. Although problems arise like “hey, I forgot my toothbrush” you can always find a place that sells toothbrushes.

Have fun!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I just decided I’m going to cartwheel my way to Texas because why not?

I'm a complete spur of the moment person. I often take spontaneous road trips to random places. It's a really enjoyable hobby of mine. I mean, that's how I ended up in the States married to a guy I'd only known 6 weeks.

Hello road trip.

I'm a planner for most things but have been known to toss it aside for trips. I can be ready in 30 minutes.

I need to have my i’s dotted and t’s crossed for my mind to relax. I’m certainly not a spur of the moment type person, but if all is squared away I can feel at ease and am more likely to say yes to smaller “in the moment” ideas.

I visited South Africa when I was little and I remember monkeys riding on our car and being on top of the hut that we stayed in. They terrified me. They weren’t doing anything too aggressive, but to this day, monkeys creep me out.

It’s all about exposure therapy. Try watching more “monkey positive” movies. :D

I’m a mix of the 2. If it’s s big trip, especially a place Ive never been, I like to have things very well planned out, Which mostly means knowing the right food/wine spots I can’t miss.

For a quick getaway, I’m game for anything, let’s jump in the car and go. It’s been a Long while but I’ve also done the, go to the airport and book, game that was fun.

< I have *so many* bucket list animals but the ones that come to mind are all ocean critters at the moment -- I can't go on much longer without seeing an octopus. And I'm dying to see the annual hammerhead migration in the Bahamas. And manta rays. And a whale shark. And a seahorse. And don't even get me started on giant squid!

Have you been diving yet in the Caymans? Stingray city is something to see. Brilliantly red moray eels. Manta rays.

Worth the trip. :cattail:

Hello road trip.

I can do the occasional mad, spur of the moment dash. Tons of fun!

Buuuut, I’m a control freak. For daily happiness I need a plan. The plan can change. In fact, adjusting can be half the fun, but a plan there’s gotta be. Otherwise I am a cranky, insecure, stressed out, snarling monster of a human.

You know, like I am in the morning before coffee. :p

Just grab your stuff and jump in the co-pilot seat, and smile. No complaining allowed. Right????

This post speaks to me.

Was the bull shark interested in you? As you had the grouper or let you be?

Can relate on the sea creatures, I’ve only seen a small octopus in person, was crawling over rocks back to deeper water while the tide was out in a bay in Cali, would love to see a big pacific octopus in the wild though, they are so incredible! Seeing the hammerhead migration would be jaw dropping. I’ve only Seen whales once, some grays were in a cove in the pac NW, watched them for hours. After that ive always wanted to see more whales.

Ohhh yes the shark was interested and I’m fairly certain that’s what brought him up from the depths. We were spear fishing off a ledge at about 75’ but beyond the ledge was the deep blue open ocean from whence he came. I saw him from a distance. He circled back around a few times and we headed up shortly thereafter.

Funny thing is - if the opposite of a bucket list exists - animals I never ever want to meet in the wild - I’d say a large bull shark whilst I’m holding a freshly speared fish tops the list!

I saw blue whales in Massachusetts last summer breaching and flapping their fins against the surface- jaw dropping. Fucking huuuuge!

I haven’t dove the caymans yet, which is funny, because I can get a plane ticket there for about eighty bucks. It’s definitely on the list though. But I want to stay in Cayman Brac - I’m an off the beaten path kinda girl.

Dream trip: the Maldives. Whale sharks and giant manta rays in one spot.

Hello road trip.

I feel like you posed this question just to reveal how uncool I actually am 😆
No!
Lol.
No I’m not very spontaneous at all!
Ninety minutes to pack and spin a bottle ?! Give me hives, woman. Dry heaves, palpitations.

I actually enjoy planning. It’s pleasurable to me. So, it’s not super cool, or bad-assy, but I get my rocks off scouring the internet and books and talking to people while I make plans— not just for a trip but for anything, really. The planning- the research- is truly part of the fun for me.

I’m gonna cook a few bison ribeyes for dinner. I’ve never made bison ribeye! I won’t just be throwing them in a pan and crossing my fingers 😊

Be careful. I think they are easy to overcook due to being leaner than regular beef.

I am an impeccable planner. But I am also very spontaneous. Example? Say I am going camping. I start packing a week in advance. I have lists. I have menus. I have patch kits. But say we are there and we see a 6 hr canoe trip just down the road...bam...done deal. Never been on a helicopter ride? Bam...done deal. Yes...I am the kind if guy that sees a sign and say...fuck...i should check that out. It is what makes memories

See!?!?

I'm not entirely sure, but I think I might be experiencing the beginnings of a girl crush. :p

Trekka, sometimes a surprise road trip is just what's needed to find a new adventure. Too much planning can lead to disappointment if things fail to meet your expectations. Just going off into the unknown and finding something unexpected is pretty amazing.

You can grab your toiletries, a change of clothes, and jump in the front seat too. Just watch the scenery and sing out whenever you see a boiled peanut stand, farmers market or a swap meet. Ditto for seedy out of the way taverns or bars with live music and food.

Packing a week in advance? That's hardcore.

I don't think I've ever packed until the night before for any trip. Even international moves. But I do have to have cleaned all my laundry and put it away in order to pull that off. I find the most tedious part of packing is cleaning everything up before I start.

That’s an amazing experience, scary as hell in sure but damn, seeing a shark like that so up close and raw, incredible.

I feel you, I love sharks, they are incredible, but have never had any desire to be in the water together.

Wow! Really? Never seen a blue, would love to, how far off the cape (I’m
Assuming you were on the cape somewhere) were you?

You bet. When you are 60 miles in...you can die from a broken shoelace. And you can only carry 45 pounds total to have fun. Food and cooking supplies...is 15-20 pounds for a week (including bear proofing). Tent is 8. Sleeping pad and bag...7. Clothes are 10. That don't leave much. Flashlight? Or cooking pot for brownies? Choices are fucking tough.

^^^ this is me too.

******
I’m a happy mix of both.
I’m all about a road trip, adventure and exploring.
Depending on which way that bottle spins I’ll know what to pack.
Yeah, I’ll plan out some vacations. We go camping a lot, so there’s always lists and prep work that needs to be done. But a lot of the National Parks are on first come with no reservations. It’s not my first rodeo on how it all works.
Last summer I somewhat not really planned a 2wks camping trip.
3 National Parks (Glacier National Park. Banff and Jasper NP in Canada)
No reservations anywhere.
I did research what camping supplies (hatchets, knives and food) I could bring over the border.
3500+ miles traveled with 90% of it non planned.
It was the best camping vacation I’ve ever had too.

Oh, yeah. I've done my fair share of those trips, too. It's been a while, though. I was actually supposed to be doing the Pacific Crest trail right now, but life had other plans.
