I think I've been around the block once or twice, but I've never understood something I keep seeing pictures of. What's with the crosses of tape across nipples?

Tape I can understand. Nipple play is cool. But why that particular thing?

I don't have first hand knowledge but a guess is either something like burlesque pasties or keeping nipples from poking and showing through clothes. Just a guess. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Some states/countries have rules against photos of nipples. Taping over them (with pasties or tape) gets by that rule. You can post a picture of the entire breast, but once that nipple is there, it's porn.

Taping over the nipple is easily done, but a single stripe of tape would be strange looking. Or stranger looking than an X. Also, the X adds more surface area to hold the tape on and prevent it from falling off.

Some places use "pasties" in the color most closely resembling the models skin.

Pasties themselves came from the earlier days of strip clubs (and burlesque) where it was not legal to be topless... so they said "Well, what's topless?" "Side boob?" "Top boob?" "Well that's just cleavage... " So someone on some court or in some state legislature said "Fine, you can expose the breast as long as you don't display the nipple! " And that led to simply covering up the nipple.

The tassels on the pasties, well... that's just decoration. ;)

I have seen a few women that could do some amazing things with those tassels.

Something like this?

It started with the regulations that clothing catalogs can't show nudity, hence no nipples. So, some were airbrushing them out after the shoot and some started taping nipples.

But then party crowd figured that if it is considered "not nudity" for the catalogs, they can't be arrested for wearing this either. So, now it is sort of a statement: " Can you see my nipples? No. So fuck off, I AM dressed."

Re: bolded bit, I accidently bought a bra that's completely seethrough. I thought it was solid nude, because no nipples were showing in the pic. :D

Taught me to read the descriptions more carefully.

LOL

I am not sure, but that actually might have been the thinking behind the whole X-tape idea. Nobody can mistake that for part of the design, so there should be fewer returns.

So, just pasties... I guess I was looking for some deep, metaphysical meaning.

Well, it’d be a sad world if we were all wired the same.

Thanks, folks.

There could be more to it for some people. Tape on bits has always done something for me from an objectification point of view - it’s kind of like the plastic bits that cover brand new things. All shiny and new before anyone gets their grubby fingers all over and cheapens it...

One of my ultimate fantasies would be to pair that with cling wrap mummification for a full, ‘new toy’ experience but there’s just never enough rl time or energy to devote to that, especially since it would be almost primarily to get me off and is massively time consuming. The waste aspect would also bother me but I’m not sure there’s much else that could be used for a similar effect.

Geometry, modesty, and aesthetics.

A regular piece of black electrical tape, placed over a woman's nipple, may not be enough to cover the nipple and areola. I know because I've done this. When you lay one piece of tape horizontally and another vertically, you may not cover all of the areola, but the result gives more of the impression of covering what needs to be covered than if there's just one piece.

Plus, two criss-crossing pieces of black tape are more aesthetically appealing than a single piece of tape.

There are other ways of doing it, which I've tried.

I've seen it too on Sub-Shop.com. my favorite store. Sometimes they tape the nipples and sometimes they don't, particularly if they're displaying nipple clamps for sale. I guess showing the nipple is considered "Porn". Weird. -

You tape you nipples?! Why?

The material of your top rubs and causes a rash/grazes on your nipples. I used to do it when in triathlons or training for sport where I was on a longish run or bike ride.

Oh! Going by the name I assumed that was a female, so there would be a sport bra involved anyway. Those are very tight, so they stay in place and don't rub against anything. Even regular bra does not move against the skin, no matter if you are walking or running.

With intense sport, with a competitive sports person, it will not matter if you are wearing a top line sports bra (female obviously) or not, you can still get chaffing. I have known men to wear a sports bra adjusted for them to fit to provide an additional layer of protection.
