the best potato salad i've ever tasted came from a Lidl store of all places back in the uk. it used sliced new potatoes in their baby skins, dill, a little dill pickle and creme fraiche rather than mayo. it tasted clean and delicious with firm but cooked potato.

h's ma'am makes it here, and uses mustard and miracle whip, 'sweet salad cubes' and cuts a hard boiled egg or two into it as well. it tastes pretty decent but not a potato salad as i knew.


If being a yankee means I know not to use miracle whip and bell peppers in a potato salad, then sign me up!

lol. it's a thing of longstanding tradition in this household. i've learned to live with it but real mayo=yum. a bit like i would make hotdogs with fried onion, ketchup and mustard but it's done differently here. :D

Ooops I forgot the hard boiled egg. It's been three forevers since I made it. Easily over five years. So there you go, three forevers equals greater than five years. :D

But yeah, hard boiled egg. And a bit of paprika on top for color.

I think I'd just not have it if it had miracle whip in it. :eek:

I've tried a gazillion different potato salads and the one I like best is very simple. Spuds, Best Foods, Thomy Delikatess, Australian mustard, pickles, red onion, S&p, and a pinch of vegeta.

Bloke from Colorado just told me that Defender 110 in decent condition will go for $110k in the US and scrappers are going for 20k plus. Holy hell, I thought they were dear over here.

They aren't cheap down here either. They stopped making them and the prices skyrocketed. One of the boys has one and it's worth twice what he paid.

You don't find value like that in new cars these days. As soon as it leaves the showroom it's worth half.
 
I'm making this soon: Authentic German Potato Salad

No fucking mayo or Miracle Whip.

  • 3 cups diced peeled potatoes
  • 4 slices bacon
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Prep

Ready In

Place the potatoes into a pot, and fill with enough water to cover.
Bring to a boil, and cook for about 10 minutes, or until easily
pierced with a fork. Drain, and set aside to cool.
Place the bacon in a large deep skillet over medium-high heat.
Fry until browned and crisp, turning as needed. Remove from the pan and set aside.
Add onion to the bacon grease, and cook over medium heat
until browned. Add the vinegar, water, sugar, salt and
pepper to the pan. Bring to a boil, then add the potatoes
and parsley. Crumble in half of the bacon. Heat through,
then transfer to a serving dish. Crumble the remaining
bacon over the top, and serve warm.


I occasionally make a potato salad similar to this.

A trick I learned that can ratchet this up a notch or two is to splash a couple teaspoons of red wine vinegar on the potatoes, right after you drain them. As they cool, some of the vinegar absorbs into the taters, adding a nice flavour profile to the finished salad.

Or, put it this way...Miracle Whip is to real mayonnaise what a glass of red Kool-Aid is to a pitcher of authentic sangria.

I like trying different flavours. There are so many from around the world. I also like kewpie mayo.
 
Miracle Whip has an off-putting sweetness and a weak, weird consistency. It's perfect on American white bread with olive and pimento bologna loaf if you are feeding a five-year-old and can keep him from picking out the olive and pimento bits.

In Mexican Mercados you can get Mayonesa which is just pick-your-brand Mayo with lime. Good with thin-sliced cabbage on fish tacos.

Also: I think Hellmans and Best Foods is the same product labeled for East vs West coast.

Southerners swear by Dukes. I like Dukes fine,, but once you add it to something or put it on a sandwich it really isn't significantly different than any other commercial mayonnaise.it's a cool thing to stubbornly insist your fridge be stocked with.
 
I made pimento cheese today. Now that I’m stoned in bed I just want a grilled pimento cheese. Fuck. I need a wife.
