Honestly, I'm starting to get fed up with this God Fauci worship.
What's so special about him?
Any epidemiologist would do just as good a job, if not better.
Fauci was more of a lab rat than an epidemiologist or public health doctor.
And I heard that he used to behave like a bitch towards his employees.
But Trump is still keeping him on his team, right? And I think he does respect Fauci. Or maybe I'm behind in the news.
I remember thinking in mid-March that two small positives that might come out of this pandemic would be that the country would come together again and that science would be appreciated a bit more.
He's got many accomplishments that lead to respect. But for me, right now, he is a science-driven advisor to whom Trump appears to be listening. He's been able to communicate science to and influence Trump and numerous other presidents over many years. That is special.
Yes, he's an eminent scientist and researcher.
But wasn't Faucci advising people "on February 29: no need for you to change anything that you're doing on a day by day basis, you can still go to the mall because right now the risk is low but it could change ."

And as much as I keep criticising Trump's botched handling of the crisis and his stupid public comments
how come people are giving Trump the third degree for it, but not his adviser Faucci?
As of February 29, there were only 70 cases in the U.S., and most of them were from the Diamond Princess Cruise. At that time, it seems like his advice to the public was reasonable given there was not evidence of widespread community spread in the U.S. at that time. He did say "it could change".
My original question here was about Fauci, not Trump. That would be a separate discussion.
You're right, he's still on the team.
Where Fauci is getting push back is because of his inordinate presence on the MSM. As a Dr. he is obviously concerned with peoples health, you can't fault him there. But there is also the economic component to this Wuhan Flu. While some peoples lives are being saved, other peoples lives are being destroyed. Fauci is not concerned with the economics of the situation, and that's not his job anyway.
The way the MSM is playing this they're following Fauci's line of shut down until next year sometime. I doubt that Fauci is really pushing that line but that's how the press is interpreting it to the public. And the public is starting to get pissed off. The press, in playing Fauci off against Trump, is the source and the reason for any problems Fauci is having.

I do think the media (those with biases in either direction) get more clicks on articles when they forecast doom and gloom, unfortunately. .

He was regularly receiving intelligence reports of what was coming. Only a dunce would believe it wasn't going to spread here regardless. ,
But it was going to spread worse if nothing was done about it.
Trump did worse than that--for six weeks he did nothing to prepare for what he was being told was coming and he denied it was coming
made fun it those who thought it would, and had stripped out all of the defenses against it. All of this finger pointing now is an attempt to deflect from his obstructionist behavior that started with six weeks of waste and has just continued at the federal level. Anyone who doesn't understand his attempts at deflection from his own criminality is a dunce.
You can't be honestly asking your question about Fauci without dealing with Trump's piece of this. And don't believe for a moment that he isn't orchestrating the smear campaign against Fauci.
Not too busy to stand next to Trump for 2-hour briefings 7 days a week, though.
White House blocking Fauci from testifying before Congress about coronavirus response
He's "too busy," apparently. Not too busy to stand next to Trump for 2-hour briefings 7 days a week, though.
Trump isn't going to let anyone in the administration testify before those morons. After "Russia Gate" I wouldn't either.
So was Trump exercising mind control on his national health advisor - when Fauci went on national TV and said these things??
"on February 29: no need for you to change anything that you're doing on a day by day basis, you can still go to the mall because right now the risk is low."

I think he was basing his response on two things.
First, the experience with SARS-CoV-1, where a small number of people in the U.S. were infected, but no widespread community spread occurred. https://www.cdc.gov/sars/about/fs-sars.html
Second, I'm not sure there was much the general public could do at that point. There was a lot that could be happening behind the scenes to prepare for a potential pandemic (getting tests and PPE ready, for example), but not that much the general population could do other than avoid booking a cruise.

The US Surgeon General considered only in March the possibility of canceling large gatherings.

It presents an interesting dilemma for Fauci. Trump has silenced him previously onstage, now he has moved to silence him totally. Trump must be very confident that Fauci will not resign because if he did it would cause Trump great political damage.
Fauci possesses a currency: Public Trust, that Trump doesn't have himself, neither does he value or understand it.
Fauci has in fact proved reasonably adept at press conferences but the certainty that he won't lie clearly un-nerves Trump.
