Hello From My Englishness

Good morning all. I hope there’s room for another Englishman on this thread? Whilst there are a few threads on Lit that I enjoy, all the action seems to happen whilst I’m asleep so it would by nice to make some friends on the same timezone.

I need the distraction to make it through the day whilst ‘working’ from home!

Welcome to the thread, Rapha.

Oh I’m so happy to see this... I have a shady north facing front garden with a carpet of bluebells ( having arrived of their own accord). I thought I might plant some wild garlic to go with it... but I need to pin down exactly how to do it. ( hey I’m a novice). I know the idea of planting wild garlic may sound a little odd but I don’t trust myself foraging ( plus I’m a bit lazy as evidenced by my AV.... couldn’t be arsed to get up or get dressed). I’ve been digging today... I was kind of expecting to find Lindo man based on the amount of rubble and prehistoric looking crap I was finding. Must have been an ancient fly tipping site once

( I’m reminded of a case involving a guy digging up half a human skull in his garden...so it does happen)

It is illegal to uproot wild garlic without the permission of the landowner so best you buy some on-line. Apparently it spreads like mint so if you are limited for space you may prefer to plant them in pots.

I wasn’t going to uproot any.... I was going to buy it online. I’m just not sure about the form it comes in and how it works with other plants. I actually have shit loads of room.... I have a big back garden but would keep it to the front. Perhaps I’ll find people foraging in there.

Is people foraging anything like AP''s rootling?

You can't uproot it, but foliage and flowers are fine to be picked where it's growing plentifully.

Sorry - didn't mean to imply you were any less than law abiding SL!

Yo, Rapha! 4am every morning can be tricky ( but she's worth it). Retired from home is tedious at times too!

Snacking do much its almost become my main form of exercise, especially when I have to sneak off to do so without the omnipresent toddler asking for some too. But I guess since the one in the oven means I can't drown my sorrows in what I'm sure would be a lovely bottle of Spanish red AP, I feel I can somewhat justify the rapidly expanding waistline.
Congrats on your recent bun baking endeavors. :)
Sneaking definitely burns extra calories.

* not very interesting factoid - I was introduced to Morgan Wallen by an American Litster and both US and Angelica said that Jason Isbell is better. Because I have high regard for their opinion I’ve been listening to him too. Jason Isbell is due to play London in October and if we’re still in lockdown I shall be burning the fucking Hobonichi “ gratitude” journal in disgust and normal British pessimism will resume.
I am not familiar with Morgan Wallen, actually. Was this when we were discussing sad songs? I might have argued that Isbell has some of the saddest songs ever. I would love to see him live. I will have to check out Morgan Wallen.

ty x i feel woefully too stupid for these conversations..but i do find the transition between smut to smart to be slow sometimes. happy monday x
I think you are being very generous in your use of the word "smart" to describe our conversations. Random musings and general silliness is how I see most of our exchanges. Please don't hesitate to join in with us. :cattail:

Welcome. I might not have recognized your username right away, but it would be hard to forget such a smartly dressed man. Good choice in using that for your AV.

He covered “ Cover me up” ....(. which is a slightly clumsy combination of words.) I like both his and the original version of that song. I think you may have directed me to Elephant and I discovered If we were Vampires. Elephant is not something I want to be listening to at the moment but it’s a fantastic song. I did manage to see Beth Hart play this year in London... I don’t know if you know her but she was really incredible live.

I agree with you about suits...a man in a nicely fitted suit is yum... have to say Rapha is looking lean in his but I guess that’s a cycling thing.

While we’re on the subject when men do that “ tell me what you’re wearing” thing. firstly you should know a couple of things:
A) it’s a really tedious question
B ) I generally lie
C) I really hope they’re wearing a suit.

Hope everyone’s ok today. ?

Thanks for the compliments. And I’d just like to make it clear that I’m always wearing a suit when I post. Or at a minimum, a smoking jacket and cravat. A man has to have standards.

You know I genuinely forget there's smut somewhere on this site most days...

There is?

I came here for the IT Crowd references, and I’m all out of those. The first rule of Englishness thread, is tell all your friends!

I may have forgotten to congratulate you on the bun! Happy impregnating period!

Hello to you too. And who needs smut when you’ve got suits, granny pants and horticulture to be cracking on with?

I hope you've got a wet suit among your collection! :D
The rain, she is relentless.

Undoubtedly true. I'm usually in my birthday suit. ;)

Thank you!

Glad to hear this as I’ve been picking a fair bit of it for soups and risottos. It’s bloody lovely.

My recommendation - lots of wild garlic leaves, some pine nuts, olive oil and Parmesan, all blitzed in a food-processor. Makes for a great wild garlic pesto, fantastic with pasta. :)

Thanks for the recommendation. I see that you’re a fellow cyclist. Good to see another Lycra-clad masochist on here!

Guilty as charged! It's looking a bit gloomy today, but there are still hills to conquer/slog up. :D

I have to confess, I baulked at the idea of getting out on the roads this morning so I took to the Wattbike in the conservatory instead!

I used to ride in all weather but since having the option of riding indoors, the idea of getting soaked is far less appealing.

What do you watch/listen to whilst you're Wattbiking, Rapha? I like watching stages of the grand tours whilst on my turbo trainer - seems right to watch other people suffering whilst I'm pounding away (ooh errr).

I generally use Zwift or The Sufferfest to do structured training or races/organised rides. On Zwift you have your avatar and the scenery to look at but most of the Sufferfest workouts have footage from pro races so you feel like you’re in the peloton!

I normally listen to either podcasts (Joe Rogan, Gossipmongers and The Move are my favourites) or if I need something to really get me motivated, some loud dance music like The Chemical Brothers or Leftfield. Or Royal Bloody are pretty good to work out to. Anything with a fast or heavy beat seems to work for me!

The only slightly depressing thing about watching the pros is when you realise just how fast they go. I know he was doped to the eyeballs but Pantani averaged something like 22kph up Alpe d’Huez which has an average gradient of 8%. I know some people who can’t hold that on the flat!
