Agreed. We paid off a shit ton of debt using his principles. It's amazing how far you can stretch your money when you apply yourself (we actually ate rice and beans for a hot minute).

When I first got out of engineering school, I was saving money for a down payment. So I ate oatmeal every day for both breakfast and lunch. Saved a lot of money during that time. His teachings are brilliant. A little over the top with his persona at times, but it makes for good radio.

In a way I was lucky in that I sort of had the rug pulled out from under me when I was a teenager and life got really hard really fast. Getting through the day was considered a success—a low bar to be sure, but you take what you can get.

I don’t mean that to sound as serious as it did, but I had to focus on some “baby steps” for awhile early on. I adapted my life that way and found that success can be defined on an hourly/daily basis. Every project, every trip, every day at work, whatever it may be, there is a beginning, middle and end. Getting to the end is success even if it isn’t where you were headed (as I said yesterday).

I don’t think of success as an “end game” “who dies with the most potato chips wins”--type deal.

Did you start something and finish it? SUCCESS!

Having once been in a very dark place, I view everyday I am not back in that dark space as a success. Only those that have been or are there truly understand this. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Even if you don't know what you must do...the solution is there...I guarantee this with all my soul.

Also this.

I'm utterly amazed that I've grown to be capable of experiencing the joy I do after the dark places I've inhabited.

Today I moved a rock wall, stone by stone, by myself, from one end of my yard to the other, to make room for a guava tree. I finished. Success!

Also had oatmeal for breakfast, and beans and rice for dinner, coincidentally.
You guys kinda sound like assholes, tbh.
Pinkies up, much?

I like HotWords and Dribble’s posts today. I’m on their wavelengths lately, it seems.

Which part was assholish?

You flat out busted your ass today then, but I don't think you do any less any other day.

What sounds assholish? I’m with Aussie on this.

Her rice and beans comment is literally a slogan from the show. The point is, you save money and live on as little as you possibly can. I still eat oatmeal sometimes. But when I was trying really hard to save up money for my house, I did nothing but eat oatmeal every day for lunch. For a long time. I’m not saying it’s bad or talking down on anyone who eats it. I still do.

I don’t really know how that could’ve come across assholish.

I want to see a guava tree! We don't have those.

Yeah, if you haven't listened to him that would sound incredibly strange 🤣🤣🤣

Hmm. Guess I don’t need a show to tell me rice and beans are cheap. Guess I intrinsically knew that.

Because I was raised on them.

Honestly it sounded insulting.

But I didn’t realize it was a quote from a show that revolutionized the notion that spending less = saving more. What a concept.

They’re super sweet. I’ve got guava jelly on my radar, and guava pastries... they’re a staple down here.

It's amazing how many people don't think about how much they spend on food and just default to doing whatever. I didn't really conciously budget every dollar. That's why it's specifically called out in the show I'm guessing.

Like a lot of things in life, it's the simple stuff that makes the biggest difference in life. Changing habits can be hard and sacrificing in the short term to achieve your goals in the long term is hard.

It's is no way meant to be insulting to anyone who grew up on rice and beans. That wasn't a thing in Australia and it's an awesome novelty for me. I love red beans and rice. I'm still trying to get the hang on peanut butter and jelly, though.

Trekka, you might find The millionaire next door an interesting book. Millionaires didn’t result nearly as much from their income as their ability to manage their spending. You apparently understand this, but the vast majority of people don’t. Common sense is unfortunately not that common. BTW I have no idea what show everyone is talking about.

That was an eye opening read. You're right about many people not being able to manage their spending. There's a lot of societal factors that play into that, especially in the US, but this pandemic is really shining a light on the fragility of many (if not most) American households. It's a sobering statistic that just under 30% of Americans have no emergency fund and 1 in 4 Americans can't cover three months of their expenses in an emergency.

Millions of people aren't working right now and the social systems other countries have done exist here. It's actually quite terrifying to think about. There's so much inequity in this country it's almost sickening.

No, I had a good day. I shoulda been more specific. The convo about beans and rice and oatmeal got under my skin.

thanks for clarifying. glad you had a great day. by the way, the “rough day” comment was meant as a euphemism for what i perceived as your mood atm you made that post. hope you have another great day today. btw, it’s Sunday! ;)
