I have cash. And time.
And more cash.
And more time!

And booze! I’m gonna need a good few shots to loosen up.

Bahaha-- I want footage of the learning process! Pronto!

What's your lap dance song? :cattail:

Oh fuck that pony ride - there’s no footage.
You’d be laughing as I drop f bombs trying to shaking my booty.

Ummm...
you and me tomorrow are gonna FT and do this crazy routine.

Sassy, you game too?!

I’m game to. For moral support. 😂

My sleeping pill is kicking in. Im either ask someone to marry me. Or get super horny. Or just pass out out

No twerking without me 😍😍😍😍

Damn it! Why does all the interesting stuff have to happen on this thread whilst I’m asleep? What I don’t know about butt vibrators and twerking isn’t worth knowing.

It's a full time job keeping up, isn't it? :D I miss all the bums, too, grrr.

There's a butt vibrator in my sex toy box. Very cool, anal beads but with an integral vibrator. Feels good.

So here comes today’s question, brought to you by yesterday’s discussion.

We talked about limitations vs the idea we can do anything. Well, which is it?

I hear my friends tell their kids they can do or be anything they want. In my mind, I’m thinking, “They’re giving a lot of hope to a future barista.”

How realistic should we be about potential? Or our natural gifts? Can we do anything or be anything we want to be, if we work hard enough?

I think to a large extent, it depends on what endeavour we're talking about. I’m a fairly decent cyclist but I could never have won the Tour de France because the guys who do have lungs like buckets, naturally elevated hematocrit levels, high lactate thresholds and an ability to tolerate pain and suffering which are genetic or just inbuilt.

I could train and improve those elements of my performance but because I’m not starting from the same base level as them, I’ll never beat them because I can’t train up to the heights that they can.

The same principles carry over into pretty much every sport you can think of. The Sports Gene by David Epstein on this subject is a really interesting read.

I think it’s less clear cut when it comes to other forms of achievement, such as education or career success. Since you’re not dealing with easily measurable performance in the same way you are with sport, plenty of not particularly intelligent bullshitters manage to achieve quite a lot of success.

They might be highly motivated and really hard working and this can make up for a lack of natural intelligence or IQ. On the flip side, I know some incredibly intelligent people who are quite lazy, don’t apply themselves to anything and therefore, to the outsider looking in, haven’t achieved anywhere near their potential. But if they’re happy with their life, that’s just another measure of success isn’t it?

In summary, I think most people are capable of doing most things to a fairly high degree of competency if they put the graft in. But I think anyone who is exceptional at anything probably has their genes, their hard work and fair dose of good luck to thanks for havin gotten to where they are.

I think everyone has the potential to do anything, but not everyone can be great at any given thing. Those blind tennis players likely couldn't beat Serena, but it's likely they can beat me. Natural talent and aptitude accounts for a lot, but I think a good majority can be made up for with focused desire. We all have talents that came easily to us, talents that we had to work hard to perfect, and things we think we can't do and/or have never cared to try.

No-one can do or be anything just by wishing it so. There's a theory that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master stuff like a musical instrument, a language (if you're over 12), a creative or professional skill. I'm not a parent, but I think it's fine to encourage kids (or anyone really) to try stuff, to put the work in, see how it goes. If it turns out you're crap at whatever it is, then fine, you gave it a go.

I think there's also a lot to be said (as Rapha mentioned) for doing stuff that makes you happy, even if it's not using your best talents or earning you loads of money/kudos. If it gives you a better quality of life, that's huge.

Ask a kindergartner can you dance? Oh yes let's dance now. Can you draw? I love drawing...we should paint too. What about singing? We can sing while we paint and dance.

Ask these same kids these same questions in 3rd grade...and all the responses are negative. We train people that if you arent the best at something...then you are lesser. Bullshit. 100% bullshit. Anyone can do anything if they choose to. It is you that places criteria as to success.

I’m of the opinion that no one should be limited in what they want to do. I say expectations should be realistic. Hopes should be high.

I’ve taught a number of people various instruments over the years. I can usually tell from the beginning a person’s capacity plus or minus a bit. Part of it is drive. But the greater part is the word I used earlier- CAPACITY. People reach a certain point and, after that point, gaining the next bit of talent takes massive amounts of input. Everyone has their natural threshold. After that limit, you can push extra hard to gain a little extra talent. But it’s the law of diminishing returns. I’ve played guitar for nearly thirty years, since I was pboy. I started taking lessons again recently because I’m stuck. But it’s incredibly hard to learn more, because I’m at my natural peak.

I think we set expectations that are harmful to people. That if you’re not a college graduate with a degree in something elite, you’ve not reached your full potential. Kids feel the need to go to college, even if it isn’t for them. It always makes me laugh how people discourage the trade jobs because of these silly expectations and idea that college makes you something special.

I have to agree with you on this. People seem to think that if you are not the best (whatever criteria you deem worthy of this title)- and immediately so, then they cannot do whatever it is they initially want to try. My daughter had to make a project for school the other day and when they Skyped to share their projects I was surprised by her negative reaction regarding her own work. It made me sad that she thought her work was less than her peers because it was beautiful, creative, and different.

I like this post and do agree with you. Though it does make me curious could she beat a blind tennis player if she played without her sight. An interesting question. Not on topic really but one I was curious about.

I agree that I could do almost anything but there are some things that I would have to invest a lot more work in to be good at, and I agree with PMann that sometimes you have return on investment. I try sometimes to work smarter, not harder. I consider myself a good writer, but me and APA don’t get along well, that’s not the way in which I excell at writing. My writing is far to conversational, so I try to focus the way I write to fit my strengths.
