it recommends flat tea-towel material rather than t-shirt material, and cotton so it can be bleached
(Tea towels are better to use than T-shirts or linens, according to the Stanford Anesthesia Informatics and Media Lab.)

not saying anyone should, just posting this to show you it's pretty easy and with dr fauci's comments about possibly encouraging everyone to wear them (once health staff are catered for) with greater understanding now as to how asymptomatic people can pass the virus on

As many as 25 percent of people infected with the virus may not show symptoms, a number that is leading the C.D.C. to consider broadening its guidelines on who should wear masks.

i think it'd be fun to see people make them and post pics wearing them

maybe i'm coming down with cabin fever *shrugs* :p

i want some of THIS fabric! pow! i'd look badass-ridiculous, not just ridiculous :D

I am having a good time experimenting making hand sanitizer. Got a gallon of isopropyl alcohol to day.

Trade you for a handful of masks

Really cool! I didn't look myself, but someone asked to have people donate elastic, it was getting scarce. Wonder if it is true?

mentions that in the article... don't know where the usa gets most its elastic from or if it's self-produced (using imported rubber??), or if the manufacturers over here are closed down as non-essentials? either way, it doesn't bleach-up well (according to the article). i'm sure there are improvs like the stretchy clip on spectacles holders or stuff like that... even clip some elastic off something else if you really want it. :)

hmmn, think it actually says 'latex' won't do well with bleach.

i'm pooped: we've been doing hours of gardening and i'm feeling old and achy from all the stooping and digging :D too many hours of idleness over winter.

if i ever make any, i might take you up on that offer... but then soap does a pretty good job anyways :D

i guess the idea of people here posting their headshots wearing silly/cute/crazy/incredible facemasks just made me smile

i'm good with my bandana handkerchiefs. tie it around your head, tuck it into your neckline and voila! and, i can wear a different color every day!

I just put on a scarf with a cat print. Then I walked into Walmart and said, "Put your paws up and give me all your toilet paper!"

Okay, the last part wasn't true. But I did score some TP!

pretty sure that'd help, so long as you've got it doubled.

:cool::cattail::D

My fashion statement this morning was a bandana and DeWalt wrap around safety glasses.

If I don't see someone in a store wearing a paper bag soon I am going to do it.

heh. simple to make in seconds, lower fold effectively tucks under chin and is closed off at the sides snugly. tucked a little material down under each eye either side of the nose as warm breath was coming up there but the little adjustment made that fine.

it's warm, wouldn't want to wear it for any extended period of time, but it gives 2 layers of cloth AND 2 layers of coffee filter paper, so we shouldn't be spreading anything to anyone. we'll try them out tomorrow when we need to do a quick but necessary visit to town.

H has a red paisley bandana one, mine's like a tie-dye red, white and blue :D

I'm going to use an old bra cup

But don't worry USA, the Fed govt is today, right now, immediately supplying 200,000 masks ....
to the private sector so hospitals can bid for them. What a fucking country

I read a post today, supposedly from a UK nurse, saying that masks were a waste of time. Really?? That's why we don't take medical advice from nurses. I think the point she was trying to make, was that medical staff need masks not stupid people who don't know what they're doing. Well thanks love, but for every 100 masks the public wears you'll get maybe 20 less patients. Sure, you need to be aware of the limitations of a mask, but ffs sake, dis-information really doesn't help.

As for making masks that can be bleached - they don't need to be. The virus will only survive on surfaces for a limited amount of time: this depends on ambient temperature and basically how quickly the surface dries/is exposed to UV/the droplet containing the virus remains viable. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200317-covid-19-how-long-does-the-coronavirus-last-on-surfaces

If you use a mask, then remember after you've taken it off it is potentially virus-loaded. Leaving it in sunlight is smart; having three or four to use in rotation is also a good idea because in 24 hours those viruses ought to be dead - like 99.99% . More importantly is to establish clean zones in your home. If I've been out on the street, I wear a different outfit/shoes etc. When I get home I regard the clothes as 'hot' for several hours, so I change clothes, wash my face / hands thoroughly and only then relax... a bit.

When I buy groceries, I regard them as 'hot'. Pre-packaged foods can either be wiped down, or in the case of my life-savings individually wrapped biscuits, spilt open and put in the cookie jar. Our bread comes in plastic wrappers, so I wipe it down with a soapy cloth. Veg you know you'll cook can be stored separate to salad veg - I wash tomatoes, but put the potatoes in a fresh container. Cans of beer - wash them, same with any tins.

Getting off my soapbox and back to masks. Use them!! The virus is spread on droplets mostly, onto your hands-to-mouth/eyes. Putting anything - anything between your mouth and nose and droplets is a very good idea. I'd rather look stupid than dead.

I'm going with shop towel, small paperclip, 3" scotch tape, rubber bands, and a few staples. It's not like I don't have time to kill putting them together.

Lots more mask wearing today. Not a bad thing all in all. Keeps people's coughs and sneezes more contained. Although I did see one person with it only over their mouth. That wasn't very good.

I'm gonna make a few out of plastic bags and send them to Busy...I heard Trump recomended plastic and the best way to keep the little viruses out
