Should we stop spitting in people's faces due to Corona?

Do you feel particulary sensitive when it comes down to the exchange of fluids at the moment? Did you cancel or postpone play parties?

Seems appropriate to not spit in others’ faces during any viral outbreak...maybe avoiding kissing strangers, too. Caution is certainly warranted.

Just exchanging fluids with one guy for quite a while now, so no changes for me.

I see your point, but I am honestly more concerned about catching the flu than the Corona virus. But I think caution should always be used at play parties, and not have strangers spitting in your face or sharing bodily fluids at any time, for safety’s sake. Now if your in a committed relationship I don’t think sharing fluids wouldn’t be an issue. But for any others not committed sharing bodily fluids isn’t a good idea.

I suppose as long as it is consensual - it aint a problem.

But point out that if you choose to - you obviously increase a chance that you might be transferring something else along with the 'fluid'

ALso Flu is a corona virus (i believe) - just not quite as 'lethal' as the COVID-19 strain

Either way, it’s still not a great ideal, to share any type of bodily fluids with strangers.

In Massachusetts, most flu seasons, tens of thousands get the flu, at least hundreds die while they have the flu. Many fewer have contracted this Corona virus. Only a few, infirm, sick people with pre-existing medical conditions have succumb. During any other cold and flu season, do you take greater precaution during sexual activity? Do you always have sex with strangers? If so, any time, you should take precautions. If you are having sex with a regular partner, what risks has that person been exposed to - foreign travel, being amidst hoards of coughing people? ... if not, you're probably okay. Those in other countries who are otherwise healthy who have contracted the virus are reporting that they are okay once it has passed. As per typical, this virus will evolve into something else, because that's the nature of viruses. We are being fed a lot of information for seemingly something that does not warrant panic.

Each flu-season there is a vaccine available for the "Flu". They are available at many pharmacies. This particular virus is new and no vaccine is currently ready yet (from what I read, this Covid-19 will possibly be around now just like the Flu — but will most likely also have vaccines for it as it mutates each year.) If you haven't done the Flu vaccine, it's not too late to get one.

...because the infection is still spreading, and because you can't find it when you're not testing for it. I'm seeing plenty of stories from people in the USA who have suspicious symptoms but can't get tested.

You might as well be saying "nobody's died in this car yet, so I don't need to wear a seatbelt".

And as we know, only young healthy people matter - fuck the rest, let 'em die, amirite?

In Italy, the death rate is currently running at about 6%. When was the last time a 'flu season did that? The health system there is overwhelmed and doctors are having to make choices about who they try to save because there aren't enough ventilators. Without a serious attempt to slow spread, you can expect the same in the USA in a few weeks.

Everybody's a fuckin' expert. Maybe STFU and listen to doctors and epidemiologists on this one.

This.

Wash. Your. Hands.

Get a flu vaccine. It is definitely not too late.

and no, the flu is not a coronovirus. It is a RNA virus (Orthomyxoviridae family)

I think we do not know exactly how the life history of Covid19 is going to be. It is reasonable to expect that now that it is in the human population, it is probably here to stay. We do not yet know if it will mutate periodically in the way that flu does.

Hopefully there will be a vaccine eventually. The earliest I would expect to see a vaccine available is 12-18 months and that is pretty optimistic. And even when it is available, it will take time for production to be ramped up enough for there to be supply enough for everyone who wants and needs one. I would expect initially that the supply will be limited to only the most high risk people.

(see supply issues related to Shingrix - which is only recommended for people over 50 and we still do not have enough supply for the demand over 1 year into its availability).

one more time.

Wash. Your. Hands.

Happy to be corrected on the flu > coronavirus point

Don't let them scare your pants on.

Sharing body fluid with strangers is always dumb. This is not the first virus on the planet. Sharing body fluid with a friend that has symptoms or has been around people that have symptoms is not wise either. But there are always viruses lurking about and life must go on. So, we are hoping to have a party this weekend. Our FWB all know the rules about coming to a party if they have cold symptoms or anything else. The Corona Virus is being hyped like crazy. It is a real problem but there are thousands of deaths from flu and other contagious diseases every year. So, be careful. Have smart clean friends that know better than to put you at needless risk and don't let the fake news folks scare your pants on.

right. This is NOT the flu. The rate of morbidity with this virus is 10x greater than the flu.
We have no idea really how many cases there are and we will not until our testing is many times our current capacity.

While it is true that young healthy people are likely to not get very sick (80% will become ill, but not seriously ill), by slowing the rate of transmission through the community hopefully we will be able to have enough hospital beds and enough ventilators for all of those that need them. I realize this is a very optimistic hope... but I articulate it because I really do not want my loved ones who are elderly or immunocompromised to die of inadequate air movement simply because there are no ventilators available. It would be a horrible way to die. I once needed to be on respiratory support for over a week and the idea of dying because of inability to breath is a true nightmare.

What we healthy people do to reduce how fast this is transmitted may save the lives of people you love.

Asymptomatic people can still have and transmit coronavirus.
