are you afraid of the coronavirus?

No, I do not fear that I will die from this virus. It appears to have a low mortality rate and since the POTUS acted so quickly to protect the USA I have little to fear since I live in the USA. However, if the Ebola virus gets into a large city then millions or even billions could die. In the case of a global Ebola virus it would be necessary to secure the border. Therefore efforts to get the wall built make a lot of sense so that there is less to fear about infections diseases like Corona virus, Ebola virus as well as terrorists and drug dealers and other thugs. The boarder wall will never stop it all, just as a face mask will never stop all of the infectious diseases. But a quality face mask can help. It serves the same function as a border wall. It lets breathable air in and keeps the crap out.

Karma would be (and might well be) for you to receive a fatal dose of reality from this. Be sure to be wearing a MAGA hat when they inform you there aren’t enough respirators for them to put you on one to prolong your life a bit. I’m sure Trump will arrange for you to go to the head of the line on that. He’s so loyal to those who are fooled by him to the bitter end.

SARS,West Nile Virus,H1N1,Swine flu, whatever they all come and go.Didn't think about it much today.

Mad Cow disease and Ebola could get bad if that got going though.

It's two posts, not a flood, honey, and it doesn't disrupt a damn thing.

It's a good post for you too. As you have claimed to have had cancer, you're going to be one of the first ones to die from this "hoax." Karma that. ;)

I don't believe in karma. I believe in having good insurance. Reposting the same information in multiple locations will get ya banned skippy. :)

You went back on ignore, so I didn't read your retort. Suggest you make sure you have your prayers in order and your MAGA hat on. :D

@JayInslee: I just received a call from @VP Mike Pence, thanking Washington state for our efforts to combat the coronavirus.

I told him our work would be more successful if the Trump administration stuck to the science and told the truth.

Maybe Pence was hoping was hoping to get tips. He's not done really well in the past dealing with issues of public health.

Is it thoughts and prayers or may the odds be ever in your favor?

POTUS literally ordered the virus to be flown into the country, but OK.

Yeah, I read that yesterday morning. How do you fumble on the one yard line?

Hahaaahhh, I haven't thought of those two in 20 years..

Bevis and butthead, not pence and woods.

Watched a documentary on them last week (on YouTube), very interesting stuff!

Some of the facts I've ferreted out so far:

The 1918 Spanish Flu infected an estimated 500,000,000 people world wide. Deaths were estimated to be between 20-50,000,000 or 4 - 10% mortality rate. I couldn't find the infection rate for that epidemic.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/1918-pandemic-h1n1.html

The seasonal flu in the US 2019:
Cases 32-45,000,000
deaths 18-46,000
mortality rate .05 - .1%
Transmission rate R.O. 1.3 (new cases from each infected case)
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm

The 2003 SARS outbreak
cases 8098
deaths 774
mortality rate 9.5%
No transmission rate found

https://www.cdc.gov/sars/about/fs-sars.html

2000 Ebola outbreak
cases 425
deaths 224
mortality rate 52%
No transmission rate found

https://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/history/chronology.html

Corona Virus (Corvid-19) so far
Cases 85,744
deaths 2,933
mortality rate 2% +
Transmission rate R.O. 2-3 (2 to 3 new cases from each infected case)

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Ebola and SARS, both have a high rate of mortality, but a very low number of cases because they were contained. The seasonal flu in the US does kill 46,000 a year, but as noted the mortality rate is .05 - .1% and the transmission rate is 1.3.

Compare that with Corvid-19: Mortality rate of 2+% and a transmission rate of 2-3.

Even those with a loose grasp of reality should be able to see that if we don't get a handle on this, if we ignore it as "a common cold" we will have a pandemic approaching the 1918 Flu. That isn't me being dramatic, it's there in cold hard statistics. We shouldn't panic, but we do need to take every step and use every means available to make sure it doesn't turn into an epidemic. There is a huge difference between caution and preparation compared to panic and hysteria. Burying our head in the sand and insisting it isn't that bad while all indications are that it is, puts us in a vulnerable position.

Nuff said.

do you fear that you'll become a victim? i can't figure out why international panties are in a twist, it seems like a real long shot that it'll be the new spanish flu. mass hysteria?

No, not that worried, and i contend you should not be too worried either if you are under 40.

1) the overall mortality rate is below 3%, but almost 0% below 40
2) 77,000 infected in China...out of 50,000,000 quarantined. That's essentially 0.1% infected after running unfettered for weeks.
3) mass hysteria is much more worrisome and could lead to more deaths
4) economic impacts could lead to deaths
5) all of this goes out the window if it mutates to something worse.

Stay calm, wash your hands, and make sure you have enough booze on hand. YMMV

President Trump's remarks calm a worried nation...

President Donald J. Trump said:
"We're ordering a lot of supplies. We're ordering a lot of, uh, elements that frankly we wouldn't be ordering unless it was something like this. But we're ordering a lot of different elements of medical."
