Where do you write?

Where do you write? Where do you prefer to write? Hunched over a desk or sitting on the floor or in a submarine?

Mine is always changing.

Today, I'm propped up in bed underneath the blankets. Space heater humming on the floor. My giant mug full of coffee is right next to me, in front of a window where fog is rolling around trees and the eerily quiet highway. A candle is lit. My books and my knitting are within reach. As well as pen and paper which is my preferred method of writing lately.

How bout you?

I prefer to sit in my very comfy chair that is suppose to be for TV, but I use it in front of my desktop. I like to have the keyboard in my lap as I type.

When I am away I sometimes use my laptop, but it is not as easy to get comfortable with it.

In front of my laptop in my room. But I can write anywhere.

In law school, I use to write/edit my erotica story in the library computer when no one was there.

Sometimes when I have some time in the office (self-employed), sometimes at home...

I write in my cluttered study.

It is the only place I can have the screen a the right height and distance.

In my study at the far reaches of a long house.

In the warm weather I sometimes write in a screened pavilion (powered up and with WiFi) set away from the house in a garden.

Cluttered study redux. I want isolation, with as few interruptions as possible. My train of thought gets derailed too easily otherwise.

My study has all my reference books - dictionaries (English and foreign), thesaurus, books of quotations, Bibles, Shakespeare, classics and mythology etc.

Reminds me when I lived at home and pulled the recliner in front of the computer to play sims. It's a good system.

Law school? I admire the hell out of that. I can't even concentrate to write in the library. Though I can concentrate enough to read. Tis odd.

I always knew you were secretly J.K. Rowling, KeithD. I always knew.

I heard about an author who wrote in a room without windows. You're not alone in that.

Only when I bought a typewriter did I buy a dictionary. That and lots and lots of white out. I absolutely hated it when I realized I couldn't spell worth a crap because I'd depended on spellcheck so long. Needed a bible for a story I was writing and got when from a former AA member.

In my living room, in the comfy chair I always sit in. For now, I write on a tablet with a bluetooth keyboard (getting a laptop soon). I have an adjustable laptop stand so the keyboard's at a decent height (beats the box full of yarn I had been using). The cats are usually curled up under the stand, draped over my feet. Or staring at me, because they've decided it's time to eat. I live alone (other than the cats and the nearly sentient dust bunnies), so I can just shut off the TV and start typing whenever I feel like it.

Lucky, I am.

Usually in a round chair or sitting up in bed, with the Kindle on my thigh. If I'm alone I'll sometimes dig out a little keyboard, but for some reason I'm not much faster with the extra fingers. I type the same way I read, in a comfortable chair.

In a barkalounger on a 'desktop replacement' mondo sized laptop resting on my lap. It's in the living room, where other family members and pets interrupt periodically, which I find useful as it helps me to stop long enough to realize that I was writing for me and not my audience. Oops.

The fireplace's on and the christmas tree is lit. Someone's watching (American) football whilst I type this with the cat curled up on their lap. She'll be on other laps throughout the rest of the night, typically. Poor thing, can't find the perfect lap.

I've written on my phone as well when the damned muse wouldn't shut up and I was away from home. Not my favorite method, but it worked well enough.

I've a library (converted a 2-person bedroom with lots and lots of shelves) upstairs with all sorts of references - mythology, physics, chemistry, theology, comics, gaming books, economics, etc - and many more available via the Web. I'm slowly realizing I'm using the online resources more and more and the hardcopy ones less and less. This makes me a little sad.

Due to my background... software engineer... I sit in a nice comfortable office type chair in front of my desk and type away on my desktop computer. I have two flat screen 24" monitors. I can write on one and have a movie or research on the other. I always have music playing when I write. Currently, Rockstar by Nickleback.

My favorite space to write outside of my own bed is this little clearing in the woods just off this trail I like to walk on. I get the best writing done out there when I dont have the internet to distract me lol.

When I write, which hasn't been lately, I lounge on a recliner sofa, ThinkPad in lap, a small stringed instrument on my left, a bookstand on my right bearing references, lamp, landline, refreshments, and one of my classic Sony ICF-2010 communications receivers, beside remotes and scraps. Surrounding walls flaunt art, books, and instruments. No TV screen. Forest intrudes at windows; I can sometimes see traffic on our dirt road.,and squirrels may peer in at me, the cheeky buggers. I occasionally rise to stomp around the house working out details. Squirrels flee then. So would you.

I have one of those adjustable laptop tables, really comes in handy. What laptop did you decide on getting?

Can you write on Kindle? I stole my mother's (I read more than her) so I have no clue what kind it is. It's black and white. I read on it and that's it.

I get the sad bit. The other day I looked up a book on Overdrive (The library of eBooks, it's perfectly legal, folks. The library pays for em.) Even though I had the book. Sometimes I give myself a pass, sometimes I make myself shut my laptop off and go dig through hardcopies.

Sorry for double posts. I'm fascinated by other people's writing spaces and crowding too many together is very un-neat.

What movies do you watch while you work? I can't seem to stand having movies on for background noise anymore. I've been listening to layered brown noise on youtube.

Writing while camping is the most lovely experience out there. Do you write on a laptop/phone/etc or pen and paper? Cause my laptop battery dies if I even think about leaving the house.

Mhmm, mhmm. Are you sure you don't write every full moon with the help of The Fae who are known for accepting trodden-on squirrels as sacrifice? Or is that some other Hypoxia?

I write on my laptop I purchased a chromebook I literally dont do anything but write on so battery is not often a problem. Having a dedicated machine for writing also helps keep me from distractions.

I write almost exclusively at a desktop computer on a desk in my home office. I like to write in peace and quiet and privacy, so I never write on a laptop in public places. I do not watch movies while I write. Most of the time I do not listen to music when I write. The only sound is the occasional whirr of the HVAC system or of birds outside the window above the desk.

I use Google Docs for first drafts So I literally write anywhere. In a long line, in a waiting room, you name it. For my non erotica I prefer to do my writing at either my office or my laptop in my bedroom. My desk in my office used to be my favorite go to ut my work system is also there and can be distracting. I just bought a new keyboard and between it and the 25 inch monitor attached to the laptop it s getting to be my new favorite place.

Its odd i love listening to music when writing my non erotica. When I am writing that, like Simon I prefer not to listen to music.

I've worked from home for almost all my life. I have a comfy office upstairs with a large desk and desktop - 27" screen for writing. I play music lots of the time (full surround sound) and when I hit a song I really like I pick up my guitar or get on the keyboards and wail - whale along with it. Kind of a break from reading or writing.

For those of you that mention using a phone or pen and paper I can't imagine doing that. I do have and have used a laptop but don't like it. I find too many key mistakes and constantly having to go back and edit. Not my fav.

Somebody asked about the kindle. I don't know about the Kindle White but you can write on the Kindle Fire. Keyboard is awfully small though.
