If SCOTUS covers for Donald Trump, corruption is the entire government

11/18/19

LI VELSHI:

Breaking news from the Supreme Court.

The Court has blocked a subpoena for President Trump's financial records.
NBC's congressional correspondent Pete Williams joining us.

Pete, what does this mean?

PETE WILLIAMS: So, it's a little hard to keep track of these cases.

This is one that came from the House Oversight Committee seeking financial records
from the Trump administration and Donald Trump personally, that are maintained
by the accountants. So it's a subpoena to the accountants. And, remember, this
followed Michael Cohen's testimony that Donald Trump sometimes inflated his
holdings, sometimes understated them, depending on whether he was trying to
get a loan or whether there were tax issues. So they subpoenaed those documents.
The Trump lawyers fought it. And all of the lower courts have said this can go
through. And there's a deadline here. Wednesday is when the court rulings
requiring this material be turned over takes effect.

So there's a Wednesday deadline here.

Now, the House had said to the Supreme Court, look, we know that this
is going to take some time to get all of these filings done. So, we wouldn't
object if the Supreme Court, strictly as an administrative matter, without
ruling on the merits, puts a hold on the effect of the subpoena. And we
would propose to file our legal briefs on November 22nd. And just a
moment ago, the Supreme Court said actually, you'll file them on the
21st by 3:00 in the afternoon. So, by Thursday then, we may get --
the door will be open for the Supreme Court to rule on the actual merits.
So, this stops the clock, in essence. But it's not a ruling on the merits.
And this Wednesday deadline now has gone away.
That would have forced the Trump accountants to
start turning over his financial records to the House.

Mitch McConnel blocked President Obama's (bipartisan friendly) pick for Justice.
The Republicans forced their picks for SCOTUS on the rest of us, and got their way.

Supreme Court puts temporary hold on Trump financial records ruling

House General Counsel Douglas N. Letter said in a letter to the court Monday morning
that the committee will oppose Trump’s motion. But “out of courtesy to this court,”
Letter said the committee did not oppose putting the D.C. Circuit’s ruling on hold
temporarily.

Roberts said in his short order that the House’s opposition to Trump’s filing
should be filed by Thursday.

The case is one of two at the Supreme Court in which Trump is fighting
to keep his financial records and tax returns secret. He has also asked the
court to review a ruling of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit
that said roughly the same materials must be turned over to state
prosecutors in New York.

Supreme Court temporarily blocks subpoena for President Trump's tax returns
from House Democrats

The court issued a temporary stay on a ruling that requires Trump's accounting
firm to turn over his tax returns

Novemeber 19, 2019

The case, which dates back to April, is one of two at the Supreme Court
in which Trump is fighting to shield his personal financial records and
tax returns.

The latter arises out of an investigation headed by Manhattan District
Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.

"Any presidential immunity from state criminal process does not extend
to investigative steps like the grand jury subpoena at issue here,"
the three-judge panel ruled.

"The past six presidents, dating back to President Carter, all voluntarily
released their tax returns to the public."

Though not required by law, every major party presidential nominee
since the 1970s has chosen to publicly release his or her tax returns
except for Gerald Ford, who only released a summary.
Financial disclosures can help paint a fuller picture of
a candidate's business positions and interests by providing
information about financial dealings, such as investments,
donations, business relationships, assets and possible conflicts
of interests.

The Courts, State and Federal are corrupted by big money, yes. No doubt there. Many, many, many rulings nationwide backing corporations over people proved that long ago.

Why do they need his tax filings?

I can understand that they would ask the Tax office, whatever you guys call it) to *DO* an audit... That is fair. But putting his tax records in the public eye is neither required nor needed unless you can GUARANTEE that they will remain private, which they can't.

People may WANT to see the records but it's only the tax office that NEEDS to see them. If they are happy then, well, tough. Basically.

Who said anything about 'public'? Criminal Investigators and Congress need them for official purposes.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!
No.

Congress does not need them at all. The Tax office needs them... Congress wants them.
The police or the investigators don't need congress, they go to the tax people, explain the situation and get a court order based on the required evidence and off they go.

Do you think that the tax people have not audited him over the years?

Which is what he's trying to block in the New York State case..

Ways and Means Committee "May request anyone's tax records and the IRS SHALL provide it"
Says the law.

The PeeResident's minions say "There is no Legislative purpose"

That's not the Law.:)

Trump tax records reveal new inconsistencies — This time for Trump Tower

Donald Trump’s business reported conflicting information about a key metric to New York City property tax officials and a lender who arranged financing for his signature building, Trump Tower in Manhattan, according to tax and loan documents obtained by ProPublica. The findings add a third major Trump property to two for which ProPublica revealed similar discrepancies last month.

In the latest case, the occupancy rate of the Trump Tower’s commercial space was listed, over three consecutive years, as 11, 16 and 16 percentage points higher in filings to a lender than in reports to city tax officials, records show.

That's either Tax Evasion or defrauding a lender. :D
