I hear you, my sister and I are perfect examples (which is why she told me to watch it).

When we were 13-14 neither of our parent's could support both of us very well nor afford courts/lawyers so sis went to live with mom and I went to live with dad. Fucked both of us up, and caused a shit storm spanning some 6-8 years.

She is the totally empathetic communicator, and a lazy as hell underachieving procrastinator. 10 years to get her BS....but she has a really great man and a wonderful home full of love and all that warm fuzzy shit.

Me? borderline sociopath...I won the Army game, went to schools most will never even see and did shit no one will hear about and it was fucking bad ass, I will never again do anything that fucking cool. To top it off I even finished my degree in biology in 3 1/2 years immediately after retirement from the Army. With WA opening up I'm on the tip of the spear, no better opportunity for my industry than right now...I have no doubt I will carve my self out quite a niche and kick ass, it's what I do.

But I couldn't maintain anything beyond a casual friendship and apparently not any sort of romantic or even really tight platonic relationship if my life depended on it, any sort of positiveness or affection and I block people out. It's knee jerk for me to do it and nearly impossible for me to stop. I'm not bitching, I have accepted it and realized I'm just one of those people who is better off going at the whole life bit alone.

But not having a parent around most definitely has negative effects on the kids, and some positive too depending on how you look at it.
