Haven't had much time for the net of late; we came very close to being burnt out, courtesy of a huge bush fire which resembled Dante's Inferno. We evacuated and went to our place at the coast, fully expecting the cottage to be raised to the ground about an hour after we left. However, this was not to be and when we returned a couple of days later everything was as we left it. A last minute wind change and a drop in temp, saved the place. The fire has since moved north and has a front of six hundred kilometers. Our neighbours about half a km down the road decided to stay but were ready to flee if necessary. That's all well and good, so long as your escape route is still open!
There was no question of "staying and defending", that's how people die. It's just a house and houses can be rebuilt. Still it was nice to see it standing when we drove into the driveway. Others were nor so fortunate I'm afraid.

So true, save yourselves and pick up the pieces later.
Glad all was ok in the end.

Welcome back, and nice to see you haven't lost your knack for great responses.
