Why do militaries try to make soldiers appear mechanical? I’m thinking of the honor guards at the tomb of the unknown soldier or embassy guards, etc. They make every motion appear to be programmed. I understand the importance of these people but why the stylized behavior? Any ideas?

A unit works as one, so you become mechanical, nothing different from one to another, like a well oiled machine.

The more ritualized the evolution, the more respect is being paid. By rigidly sticking to the custom of precision and synchronized movement, the highest possible honor is paid to the one honored.
