Sometimes I wonder if people are hesitant to start a conversation because they feel like when they get one started and it goes for a bit and seems to be going well it will just end. The communication stops and they have no idea why. That risk of finding a good person and losing them without a word can override the desires to talk. Or, perhaps they feel if they find a good conversationalist they will get to attached and find themselves overly anxious for a reply, making it more stressful than it needs to be.
Such thoughts enter my mind and I have no clue how people feel about these things, but I like to share them. Everything is a risk to your emotional state of mind, but without risk there is little pleasure.
