Do you eat food from gas stations?

But, a few miles earlier, you could of stopped and picked up a pizza that you phone ordered for the trip. Food coma nap time in the pass!

It’s like you don’t even know me. Don’t you remember my thread on how to stay awake while driving?

Yes, I'v eaten at gas stations (or in little places attached to them) when I am on a long road trip.

Just some free floating things to consider:

If you have a space that has, over time, hosted a series of restaurants/cafes and they've all folded within a few years - that is a warning of a structural problem that may have nothing to do with the food itself. (Poor traffic patterns, poor parking, etc.)

Truly good food places can survive/thrive almost anywhere - but you have to have truly good food.

So much of cafe success is related to location, access and behavioral patterns of customers and potential customers. Here (big city, million people) there are no gas station cafes - there is no need for them. In more rural America it is far more common, generally because competition is lower, choice is fewer, and mixed use spaces are more common. Most of those places are fed by the interstate or major state highways.

It's been so long, it's slipped my mind! Come by for another hike up the hill!

There's a local sandwich place that rents space out from a gas station by me. They are, hands down, one of my favorite places to go for quick, simple, good food. Everything is homemade, they're fun to chat with, and I like supporting local stuff over chains.

Thanks!

If I'm on the road....maybe if the place looks nice and clean, usually if I'm driving all day I'll come across a well kept place.

Day to day?

No.

That being said, I used to when I lived in Kentucky, because the best diner in town was part of the truck stop. Local family owned place, had amazing omelettes, killer waffles and pretty good coffee, never burnt.

Thanks!

As a rule, I don't eat anything prepared by the station because I have this thing about my food tasting like fuel. I will sometimes buy coffee there if I'm out and about and can't find the time to actually stop someplace.

It's a GAS STATION, not a restaurant.

Thanks!

Normally I buy just coffee at any gas station, but there's a gas station in Idaho that's attached to a Burger King, I do pick up a hamburger there if I happen to be hungry at the same time I'm buying gas.

Thanks!

With any business you need to do your homework.

How many customers a day frequent the station?

Average ticket for sundries?

Peak hours of business?

How many people pass by the station a day?

How many people in the City where the station is located, surrounding cities?

What does this gas station offer, that others don't? Price, quality of service, cleanliness etc?

Is the stations business affected by weather?

Are all the parts and pieces and left by Subway im working order and will they pass Serve Safe & Health Department?

Do you have your own walk in refrigerator or do you share? What shape is it in?

How much cash outlay is it going to take to get the business up and running?

To sustain each month? Rent, utilities, wages, taxes, insurances.

You need to have at least a years worth of liquid cash set aside for unexpected expenses and set costs before you ever enter into opening a business.

Good Luck enjoy.

Ah... Lots of things I didn't think of!

WaWa.

They do good coffee. There are people ordering their food all the time in the morning when I'm there. I've had one of their breakfast sandwiches and their caesar salad before. Not bad.

Thanks!

I was at first going to say gross, no, who wants that hot dog that’s beeen rotating for the last day and a half? But then I remembered the gas station that’s the last stop before heading into the mountains. It has decent, made to order fried junk. Sometimes greasy food is what’s right for the day. Then I have to always think, hmmm no bathroom for 2 hours driving through the pass can be iffy.

Thanks!

Well, it next to a pot shop, so there's that.

Gas stations don't survive long by killing off patrons. More and more, the stations have some chain attached, a BK or some chicken joint or a Subway... That's just franchise food.Basic, out of the cryovac crap. But, and these are fewer and farther between, there are old out of the way stations that serve up questionable, but undeniably delicious local fare that "don't ask, don't tell" was made for. In the deep south, many old out of the way stations have hot sausages and jerkys and the like. Been selling these delicacies for years... hidden gems, if you ask me. You can die off of tainted romaine lettuce from Chillis - what's wrong with a little Boudain from an indy pump shop in Lafayette? Or some smoked trout from a stream side Shell station outside of Provo? Live a little...

Casey's pizza is hands down my favorite as well.

The best barbecue in Kansas City has its original location attached to a working convenience store. People line up like crazy to go to that place. No problems for me either. But then it's almost like two separate businesses, even though they attached and you can walk through one to get to the other.

No, I know people that do and talk about it like it natural..... Its food at a GAS Station....LOL
