Do you eat food from gas stations?

We have a gas station near here that has a Krispy Krunchy Chicken place inside. It's Cajun food. I've never tried it. Not my thing. I've been told it's doing well though.

Same gas station also had a Subway Sandwich place. That did not do well so it's now closed. But they left the kitchen behind.

I was approached by someone who wants to use the former Subway space to sell food. Healthy food, although he did mention burgers. Not sure those are healthy or that they would be something a person going to a gas station would want!

There's another gas station near here that has a 5 star taqueria inside. I have not tried that but people say they have the best tacos ever.

This person approached me because he likes my cooking and he knows that I like healthy food. But... Does a person who buys food at a gas station really *want* healthy food?

My experience with gas stations is limited. I buy my gas at Costco 99.9% of the time. Just get the gas and leave.

I have been in gas stations on vacations or during cross country moves. I have bought food then. Used to be very little that was healthy and it was all prepackaged. In more recent years, I have seen cheese, yogurt, salads, fruit, sometimes popcorn. But that's not what I'm talking about.

I like my own cooking so don't even go out to eat unless I have to. So I am not the type to buy food at a local gas station. And pretty much only locals go to this place.

He wants to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Only thing I could think of was granola. Note that I do not personally think granola is a healthy food but most people do. I envision maybe 2-3 different mixes and assorted add ins. This could be served in a cup, topped with fresh fruit, milk, whatever. The cup would make it portable.

Beyond that? I've got nothing. I want to help him but have no clue. Clearly he should sell things that are different than what the chicken place sells. He is envisioning food delivery and an app that allows customers to order a month of meals at a time. Another thing I would never do. Nor can I envision anyone doing that.

At any rate... Would you eat food from a gas station? If so, what offerings would you want? Thanks!

Not unless there was literally nothing else. I'd buy a few pre packaged pepperoni sticks first until i got home before any restaurant style sandwich. Maybe a bag of doritos and a sugar free red bull. Fuck now i want cheezies or a box of tropical mike n' ike's.

Exactly. Thanks!

There's a local sandwich place that rents space out from a gas station by me. They are, hands down, one of my favorite places to go for quick, simple, good food. Everything is homemade, they're fun to chat with, and I like supporting local stuff over chains.

If I'm on the road....maybe if the place looks nice and clean, usually if I'm driving all day I'll come across a well kept place.

Day to day?

No.

That being said, I used to when I lived in Kentucky, because the best diner in town was part of the truck stop. Local family owned place, had amazing omelettes, killer waffles and pretty good coffee, never burnt.

You Americans seem to have a problem.
There are no dirty gas station food services over here.

No reason not to but expecting healthy is sorta not smart. Place here has some good chicken and another has some killer pizza and they great deals during football season.

An 11 Bravo coffee snob

I'll shove instant crystals in my lip if that's all I've got, and there have been days that's been a real treat to have.

But if I have the choice and it's between spending my money on burnt coffee or not burnt coffee? I prefer the shit that ain't burnt.

If that makes me a coffee snob then so be it.

Where exactly is "over here" ?

haven't ate anything outta a gas station except coffee and candy bars since I stopped being suicidal...

As a rule, I don't eat anything prepared by the station because I have this thing about my food tasting like fuel. I will sometimes buy coffee there if I'm out and about and can't find the time to actually stop someplace.

It's a GAS STATION, not a restaurant.

Coffee quality and variety has improved markedly in some locations over the years. Has the benefit of being damn cheap, too. But gas station food is only a last resort for me.

Normally I buy just coffee at any gas station, but there's a gas station in Idaho that's attached to a Burger King, I do pick up a hamburger there if I happen to be hungry at the same time I'm buying gas.

With any business you need to do your homework.

How many customers a day frequent the station?

Average ticket for sundries?

Peak hours of business?

How many people pass by the station a day?

How many people in the City where the station is located, surrounding cities?

What does this gas station offer, that others don't? Price, quality of service, cleanliness etc?

Is the stations business affected by weather?

Are all the parts and pieces and left by Subway im working order and will they pass Serve Safe & Health Department?

Do you have your own walk in refrigerator or do you share? What shape is it in?

How much cash outlay is it going to take to get the business up and running?

To sustain each month? Rent, utilities, wages, taxes, insurances.

You need to have at least a years worth of liquid cash set aside for unexpected expenses and set costs before you ever enter into opening a business.

Good Luck enjoy.

Or, IOW, buy a push cart.

WaWa.

They do good coffee. There are people ordering their food all the time in the morning when I'm there. I've had one of their breakfast sandwiches and their caesar salad before. Not bad.

When I travel to Dallas, I make a point of stopping at the Kolache Depot Bakery, an authentic Czech bakery/gas station in little Ennis, Texas, where there's a yuuuuge concentration of Czech immigrants.

I was at first going to say gross, no, who wants that hot dog that’s beeen rotating for the last day and a half? But then I remembered the gas station that’s the last stop before heading into the mountains. It has decent, made to order fried junk. Sometimes greasy food is what’s right for the day. Then I have to always think, hmmm no bathroom for 2 hours driving through the pass can be iffy.
