I am sure it can be awkward for most women, but no more than going to your gynecologist. For me being a former photographers model it wasn't. Most places I know of the technician is a woman, even if the owner or doctor (cosmetic surgeon many times). The tech's have to be licensed, at least in my state and where mine was done in California.

Painful, yes but no where excruciating. It is a sting no where near as bad as a bee or ant sting. A few times there was one or two sort of like like someone suddenly plucked a hair and I think it was more the surprise of it being a little different than the sting one gets used to. I was nude the first two or three sessions, but covered by a hospital gown and a sort of a "tent" open from my waist down where the work was being done. The "table" was basically the same as my gynecologist had me lay on including the stirrups.
