I follow some dancers/choreographers on Youtube and I just got a notification of a new video. I don't want to give her name publicly because I'm going to badmouth her a bit. I love her to pieces and she's hot as hell! Except for when she puts on heels.
This woman is best known for hip hop and she normally dances in bare feet or some kind of athletic shoes. Sometimes combat type boots. But in heels? She is gawky and awkward and I find her hard to watch.
So I cringed when I saw the opening of the video. She and two other girls had on black, spike heeled shooties!
Now normally my eyes would be drawn to her but not this time. I couldn't bear to see her in those heels! But... Thankfully she must have realized her shortcomings there and didn't do too much in terms of walking around, turns, etc. And when she did do such things, they cut her off at the knees. Mostly she did floor work like splits and writhing around on the floor and the other two danced.
Next up was a guy. I've seen him before. Can't tell if he's Latino or Middle Eastern but does not dance like a dude at all! Super sexy but I'm sure not of my sexual proclivities. He was totally rocking those shooties though! Sad to me that a guy would do better in the heels than the choreographer.
Rest of the video was all females. One had sandals but all spike heels.
I have seen videos from another studio where everyone wears heels, including the guys. I don't get that at all. They're not in drag at all. Usually they have on the typical unisex dance stuff. Sweats, yoga pants, leggings, T or tank top.
Personally, I don't do well in heels and never have. I did have a some shoes with heels when I was younger that I was able to dance in. I did check myself in the mirror. I don't want to look clumsy.
Saw a woman the other day trying to enter a restaurant. She had on high, wedge heeled flip flop sandals. They were sparkly and pretty but she was falling all over in the things and about every three steps she had had to stop to adjust them.
These days I pretty much only wear ballet shoes to dance in but I don't have a sprung floor so when I'm doing hip hop stuff and landing hard on my feet, my heels pay for the lack of cushioning. I am dancing on carpet though at home so sneakers don't work well as they stick to the carpet and I can't do graceful turns in them.
So bottom line, I say... If you can't rock heels, don't wear them. Unless you're just going to lounge around in them because that can be sexy.
Your thoughts?
