You say that like it's a bad thing.

Our mid-Sierra heatwave is over. Freeze tonight, maybe snow in a few days, yada yada. Mountain weather, for sure. But today was temperate enough for us to haul two years' of beer and soda bottles and cans down to the briefly open recycle center. Made almost fifty bucks on that run, and stopped at the nearby taco wagon for superb crispy carne asada burritos.

The nearby Kit Carson Pass highway supports little business clusters every few miles, some old migrant stations, some supporting surrounding hamlets of a few thousand recluses. The closest has market, pizza, hardware, liquor, biker bar, and dentist. Next downhill has better hardware, post office, and Chinese food. Beyond that are redneck burgers, mechanics, U-Hauls, DIY car wash, and the bear store. We need wood bear oil. We can't leave the wood bears un-oiled, can we?

The first of May -- it's Mayday, Labor Day, Workers' Day, in most of the world. USA doesn't care much for (i.e. shits on) laborers so we're shunted aside and pushed into meaningless Cinco de Mayo to slurp beer and guacamole. But have you seen avocado prices lately? Ay yi yi! I miss Grandma's avocado tree. And rhubarb bushes. And slinky laughs.

I'm okay with not being near Houston.

Celebrates the Mexicans beating the French in 1862.

Here, with our Hispanic majority, Cinco de Mayo is nearly ignored -- except by bars milking a buck or two out of non-Hispanic celebrants. Last year it was almost a non-event. This year I expect it will be.

Today is Quatro de Mayo. Today and tomorrow feature 'holiday' specials at a pseudo-Mexican eatery down the hill. But the four taco trucks here in Amateur County get rave reviews and we've enjoyed cheap eats from all. Burritos rule.
