Statistics and numbers are hard to pin down definitively because not all right-wing extremist incidents are reported or covered the same as say, those allegedly committed by Muslims. If the RWCJ reactions here were not indicator enough, a 2018 study from the University of Alabama found that terrorist acts committed by Muslims received approx 357% more news and media coverage than other, similar attacks.

Incidents are increasing every year, last year being a banner year for right-wing extremists. They favour religious institutions, primarily Muslim and Jewish targets, and schools, but don't limit their terror to just these soft targets.

Trump has been misconstrued since day 1.

Let's take the "there are bad people and good people on both sides" comment as an example of how he's been misconstrued.

You know Trump is rich. Being rich he's a target for anyone who can fabricate any excuse to sue him. ONE of the more common excuses to sue the rich who give public statements is defamation.

So, rather than set himself up for such a suit, Trump says that everyone is a good person. You can't sue someone who just said you were a good person so Trump has created a speaking habit and uses that term whenever he is asked about the character of someone else.

Imagine how easy it would be to seize on the statement that someone is a good person and then contrast it against your own statement that any one of the above is an evil person. It's not that far to then say that Trump is in league with those evil persons and that he supports the evil committed by those persons.

Yet, there's not a shred of evidence for either contention except what you say. And then, if you repeat it often enough, the dunderheads who cannot think for themselves begin to repeat it. Repeat it often enough and it begins to have the feel of truth. Even if it's built on a lie.

Enter the "Trump spews hate" narrative.

Yes, there are other things one can point to which maybe haven't been misconstrued. That doesn't mean Trump set the bar. Only that if you look hard enough, you can find what you're looking for everywhere you look. Especially if you rely on the first lie as proof and a reason to keep repeating it.

The 'There are good people and bad people on both sides' has nothing to do with him being rich, and everyone knows the guy does not let the threat of a lawsuit stop what falls from his mouth or tweets. Charlottesville, his handling of the Pittsburg synagogue aftermath, his casual anti-Muslim bigotry... all this hate rhetoric and implied violence resonates with the white supremacist and white nationalist crowd. They eat that shit up. That's why your boy is getting shoutouts in their manifestos and mentions on their hate-filled websites and social media sites.

The fact that Trump doesn't seem bothered when his name is mentioned by these right-wing terrorists, as a symbol or inspiration to protecting white identity and the killing Muslims, is troubling as well. Not a bleep or tweet from the orange Don, denouncing any of it. But, if Baldwin parodies him in a skit on SNL.... twitter-storm ensues.

Is Trump directly responsible? No. But again, he is the president, and as such his voice and words are heard and read by a far larger audience than most. He is, and should be, held to a higher standard. When he encourages violence, implied or directly, and white nationalism, and does not strongly condemn any and all violence and acts of terror, whether on American soil or abroad, it is not difficult to see a correlation between his degrading language and Islam-is-a-threat rhetoric, and the sharp increase in domestic murders, acts of terror, and violence committed by right-wing extremists.

You refusing to see or acknowledge this, or if you are aware but don't criticize, says more about you than it does about Donald Trump. It's not a right or left thing, it's a decent human being thing.

Our local mosque is doing the opposite. It is inviting everyone in for Friday prayers tomorrow - short prayers followed by refreshments.

That's my concern. I definitely wouldn't go there to pray, and if I was a woman, I'd perhaps make a point of not wearing a hijab while at a mosque (I understand they don't have to in some mosques if they aren't praying). I could easily imagine myself sitting on a lawn-chair near the door snacking on samosas and drinking Kool-Aid or coffee or chai (defraying the cost with several dollars), but the purpose isn't worship or even combating Islamophobia—again, the Qur'an says a great fire awaits us unbelievers—but for defiance against the murderous.

I'm not sure if wearing a hijab is a good idea. I tend to look down on politicians who do—pandering. There are exceptions: Clinton going to a—I believe it was—a Sufi mosque, as Sufis are persecuted; and Ardern, given the tragedy. The intention is good, but if a white woman wore a hijab in Toronto, people like me would regard her as either a convert or someone like a Bosnian (I had one a Bosnian as a neighbour—as well as a Serb and a few Croats!), Turk, Central Asian, or someone similar, not a possible-secularist who's showing solidarity. I sometimes wonder if the Pakistani ladies here wear hijabs to distinguish themselves from the Hindus, Sikhs, and Christian Arabs (a few of the churches in my area have services in Urdu, and I think Arabic—I don't know for sure as I can't read the script); and the Somali ladies as more a cultural thing with them—i.e. African.

It doesn't help that the hijab is compulsory in some countries—it's not like wearing a cross or Star-of-David, or the Qur'anic reasons for—the so-called-"prophet"-who-fucked-little-Aisha-when-she-was-only-nine-years-old made it compulsory for women to wear it lest men regard them sexually—apparently it's a woman's fault if a guy gets turned on by her physical appearance and perhaps does something bad because of it.

This is not to single out Islam: many American Christians (if not proportionally then at least numerically) have had sex with minors (some likely legal), there's the issue of slut-shaming, and things like toplessness is generally illegal in the US—I figure particularly the Bible Belt and/or red states; but Muhammad didn't make it easy for those wanting to show solidarity.
