i've just been reading another of those "best rock album" books. why do i even bother; i never agree with them.

for example:

they list "beatles for sale" as their all-time worst album. i remember it in first release, everyone LOVED it. it probably is the closest thing to their live cavern club/hamburg performances. i still play it. whereas, they cite "abbey road" as one of their best. that and the phil spector version of "let it bleed" are two of the albums i NEVER play.

and the stones-"exile on main street"? i don't think so. they had not long before made "beggars banquet" and "let it bleed" which i think are their two best. even "sticky fingers" is better. "exile" seems to have a lot that should have been thrown away. and everything after about 1971 by them sucks.

same with joni mitchell. "blue" is a supposed masterpiece. i wonder if they say that because teenaged girls still like it? The hissing of summer lawns" and "hejira" are so much better in quality. and again, anything she recorded from "mingus" on sucks eggs.

then, they included a bunch of bands/performers who i don't think ever made a single record that was worth anything.

i feel better now.

They really should put a disclaimer on those lists. Maybe 'Best of the gemeration' or 'Best of the time period'. Music evolves and grows by people who take all of those "Best Ever" albums and learn from them. Many better albums have been made since, but those were ground breaking for their time. They are ranked on the voters nostalgic memories of places and feelings. Maybe some are rated for the musicality of their picks, but that is as subjective as the taste of foods. They say your musical tastes freeze in your early 30's. If that's the case, none of these lists should hold any significant value whatsoever.

EOM

I tend to like music from artists that are not played on the radio. For example, I dearly love "Liberian Girl" by MJ, but it is hardly played on the radio and it is never found on "best of" albums or editions.

Nobody cares. :)

one of my faves, too. but then, i really like "they don't care about us", which most people hate. i'm still mourning michael.

Yes! I love that jam!

I miss him, too! I still remember where I was when I heard of the sad news! :(

my sister made a special call to me to break the news because the week before we'd been talking about how excited i was for his big concert come back that was to be. there's no one like him.

No, he was one of a kind! A gift to the world!

Best of, is always subjective to whoever puts the lists together. They're "best of" is rarely my "best of".

I’ll give you your money back for it. The Lennon/McCartney harmonies on that album were among their best. Might be my favorite pre-1967 album.

Interesting. Love the Beatles but not one song on that album

I came in real late to the game but I like Yellow Submarine.

I don't really have like... a concept of a "best of" album as such, but companies and people do put out playlists, and there was one that my gf showed me because she thought I would like it that someone had put together called, "Songs That Get White Folks Tore The Fuck Up"or something like that, and whoever made that did put together an impressive list. It was some really good shit.

However, I feel there were notable exclusions- the one I was particularly miffed about was Devil Went Down to Georgia. I guess I went on and on about it for longer than a playful little thing warranted because we got into kind of a thing and she was like, "That's just for country shit" or something and I was like, "NO! NO IT'S NOT! IT'S ALL WHITE FOLKS! WASPS WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT A FIDDLE IS LOVE THAT ONE SONG! YOU CAN'T PUT SWEET HOME ALABAMA ON THERE AND THEN SAY THAT SHIT!"

Anyway, songs that need to be included on this list are:

1: Devil Went Down to Georgia
2: Anything by the musical genius that is Weird Al Yankovic
3: Bullet With Butterfly Wings
4: Jolene
5: All Star
6: 7 Nation Army
7: Yellow Submarine
8: Country Road

Then I think it would do full justice.

Sure Beatles for Sale is important and fun, but the band evolved so much in a very short time. They pushed the envelope of pop music in so many ways. The mid and later records are much more important in the lexicon of music.

Not to say your opinion is wrong, you love the records you love, and that's totally cool.

I really, really, really love the 3 Stones records you prefer. Exile is a critic's favorite because it doesn't have popular songs, and its the sound of heroin... It edgy and odd. There are some real gems on it and I do believe its a great record that captures a moment and a mood. Rocks Off, c'mon that tune kicks ass and is a great opener. Sweet Virginia, Tumblin' Dice, Shine a Light, all fantastic. Yeah there are some odd things, and I can see how they might annoy you (and others), but those things feel like a being at the sessions, hearing the things normally left out.

All that said, I listen to the other 3 more often than I listen to Exile.

The true key to ALL of those records is "Mr Jimmy." Producer Jimmy Miller make the best Stones records.

.

This cracks me up - I was at a party this weekend and my brother was there. I said, you can't get white people on the dance floor until you play Journey. Sure enough "Don't Stop Believing" starts and everyone is up and singing along.
