I’m still new around here and with only three works published I’m sure that I check my stats more often than most of you veterans. Of the four metrics tracked: score, views, comments and favorited the one that I’m a bit perplexed about is the last one.

Curious about the folks who had tagged my story(s) as a favorite I was surprised to discover that each and every one of them is a serial favoritor. That is to say each had hundreds of favorite stories and hundreds of favorite authors.

I’d love to hear from those of you who’ve been around awhile what the story is with these users.

Some use favorites as bookmarks. For some you hit something they liked and they wanted to keep it where they could come back to it easily. There are all kinds on Lit and explaining any of them is a grab bag. Just be happy you are getting them. ;)

Who knows what goes on in the minds of readers. I certainly don't. If you go by their lists, some folk read a whole lot of smut, that's for sure. I'm just glad some of it's mine :).

I keep links to favourite stories in a folder in my computer. Favouriting them just keeps it at the site instead.

You can go back to read something for XXXXXX purposes. You know THAT! ;)

I’m the odd one out here. In the 3 years I have been here, I’ve only favorited 2 authors on Lit, both women writers. I don’t use that feature as a “bookmark” so much as it’s a reference for me. What better way to write a transvestite character from a female POV than to study how women write?

Maybe I'm just paranoid...but when I follow one of those profiles and see all 42,000 stories they have added...my first thought is; Well, there goes another pirated copy to some unknown web-site  Should I seek professional help or is this a normal reaction...or even just sort'a normal would be comforting

ETA: I guess I forgot to really answer the question; I don't know either...but I suspect it's a book-marker. Getting an add for Favorite Author is more important IMO. Money in the mail is even better

I think there is a fair degree of using favorites as bookmarks. I do that to some degree, and as a consequence I've favorited many authors. But the more to the point answer is I think this site has a very large number of very avid smut readers. They will read multiple stories into the wee hours of the night. I say this because I've tracked such readers favoriting chapters of series I've written, one after another, sometimes only 15 minutes apart -- enough that I don't think they're just favoriting them as bookmarks, but that they're actually reading them.

speaking only for myself, i favorite authors whose works i want to follow. an automatic notice shows up on my dashboard whenever one of those authors publishes.

i rarely favorite stories...usually i do so in anticipation of closer study.

Another reason you get put on a favorites list.

An automatic notice shows up on trolls dashboards. It made 1-bombing people you don't like very easy. Some have noted that 1-bombs are flying faster than they used to. This might be the reason. The troll now has a list for his/her morning and afternoon bombing runs.

Hahaha... Damn, TxR, you make it sound like a mofia hit list when you say it like that. The only thing missing is the sound effects of D-day with the bombs falling, but I get what you’re saying.🌷Kant

Even if they're just bookmarking, that is a sign of interest. But yeah, there are some very avid readers out there -and God bless them. They could be reading Flaubert and Poe instead of us.

Hey I am all for getting tagged as a favorite. Right now only my stories but perhaps someday I rate an authorial favorite.

My curiosity was peaked and I wanted to see who was favoriting my stories (its more or less the same bunch for each of them) with a plan to drop them a little note saying “Thanks for putting me on your favorites list” but when I saw the sheer number of stories and authors and no details in the profile I thought that it was unlikely that they would actually see any message nor know who da fuk I was.

Anyway if any of you are listening right now I thank you for honoring me with your favoriteization. May the odds be always in your favor!

Well that was perfectly cringe worthy

My favorites are a mix of stuff that looks interesting and works I really enjoy. I used to only favorite one chapter per story but that has changed.

I’ve seen this too, it is rather endearing to discover that over the course of a weekend several chapters of a story gets added to favorites. I have a few followers who are serial favoriters as well. Whenever a new cultist pops up on my dashboard I reverse stalk them, read their profile, see if they have written anything and then see who else they have favorited. More often than not I can figure out which story of mine they stumbled upon by looking at the other authors they follow. I find it interesting at least.

Not just the sound effects but the visuals too:

Look up at the skies and a troll is swooping down on you.

[Digression: notable how some people's deaths - even if you only see their planes or trucks - are memorialized indefinitely on film.]

That sounds so simple that it must have a degree of truth. But that is favouriting you as a writer not your story. So how do you delete yourself from their favourites list? Can you stop someone putting you on their favourite writers list? How do you know the imposter from the genuine? Is it worth bothering about? Is 42 really the answer or is it another number? Confused? You will be. Back to the 70’s for that one.

Back when we were discussing the new CP and Manu mentioned the notification, I asked if there would be a way to opt out. I don't remember his answer off the top of my head.

The notification is of a new story posting by someone on your favorites list. In my case, I have at least 6 alts or people who troll my every story as soon as it posts. Ever once in a while in the past, I would slip one by them. That is not the case now.

Yes, 42 is the universal answer but some questions are not universal.

I've noticed recently several times in which a story favoriting was accompanied with a down rating of the story.

I can only speak for myself, but I favorite individual stories from my favorite authors as a personal Seal Of Approval. Yes, I read a lot of stories here but I don't like piling on in the comments regurgitating what everyone else is saying. A favorite is a quick and easy way to show my appreciation. After reading these posts it seems most of you don't really care one way or the other if you receive favorites on your stories or not.

I receive many more faves than un-faves so I am happy.

Mainly because of the book-mark on/off effect, I think. Comments are more meaningful, however rare they might be; especially the thoughtful ones.

I wouldn't say that. I always feel appreciative of a reader that has favorited my story. I've been publishing for over two years and I still think there's something kind of amazing about being able to connect with a reader and knowing that the reader has enjoyed something I've written. Favorites are useful, too, because they draw still more readers. The more favorites a story gets the more likely it is that new readers will find and read the story.

I'm pretty sure that authors are deflated if they see that a story has been favorited but not voted a 5. Let's be honest about that.
