Idle Hands



All this talk of hands and skill and innuendo made me think about tools I used to use and the fact that in my job I have to be handy.

So I figured I'd take this pic of things that I used to use, things I use every day, and one thing that I wish I got to use more often


And I will be honest, maybe I'm showing off a little bit how fit I feel today.

Gorilla pod makes a small tripod that clamps the camera and can be wrapped around posts and things. Might be a worthwhile investment.

Could make for more full body shots--provided people want to see that.

But most importantly, what they hell am I looking at.....rope, some sort of pulley guide? Some sort of puller? And which do you wish you used more often?

You know, I had thought of making a matching game out of the three items. Or at least which things I fit with each description

-A leftover chunk of rope
-A set of dividers
-A small spokeshave


The first item I use every day at work.

The second item I used to use, but my job has changed.

Ok, I am pretty good at using tool box items in creative ways but this is out of my skill set.

Now I would want to use the rope more often, and toss the other two in the junk drawer.

But I suspect you use the rope, used to use the dividers, and want to use the spokeshave more.

A spokeshave is a pretty high falutin' tool used by old times wainwright's and fine furniture makers, so there is no shame in not knowing what it is or does.

I have several inherited tools and sometimes I feel an obligation to use them and a frustration bordering on shame that I do not.

I am mammal. I have fur, sharp teeth, and a decent sized brain


I am primate. I am descended from a line of social creatures that can use tools.

For years at work I used my mouth as a tool, to instruct, as a vise to hold needles, thread, rope.
Teeth are I'll suited for such a job and my chipped teeth get me mistaken for a hockey player.

I enjoy using my mouth, to state my case, for the pleasure of big fancy words, to do my job and keep myself fed.

I enjoy kissing, biting, nibbling, scratching with my mangled teeth, although not everyone is a fan.

I may be older, and grayer, and slower than I once was, but I can still bite.

Well, at least I am not the only one constantly using my teeth as tools (same with my nails), my front teeth are actually bonded, have been for a long time, but I break the bonds constantly. too lazy to find a wire stripper, eh teeth strip wire well, tear tape or a label, can't get a bottle open. so yeah, I think they get rebonded once or twice a year (they should last 4 to 8 years). Dentist and I are besties lol. well that is ok, he is a cool young guy and amuses me so.

My job is very seasonal. I spend nearly every day between Memorial and Labor Days outside for hours at a stretch interacting with tens, I'd not hundreds, of people.

Then the winter comes, with it's gray days and the need to stay bundled up. The crowds are gone and the work that is left is solitary, isolated, indoors.

It is always a struggle to maintain a happy attitude without the sun, without human contact.

So days like today, even though they chill me to the bone when I step out in the wind, offer some solace from the warmth of the sun on my skin.
