Kamala Harris along with a few other Democrats are trying to SELL ! us on this health care for all. calling it "Medicare for all". She even wants to get rid of all standard Health insurance that people have. This is driving me nuts. Because I NEVER HEARD! anything from anybody, Politicians, media people, as to the coverage. It pisses me off that no one, wants to talk about the cost, just stupid shit, like it's FOR ALL!. Can anyone tell me what kind of coverage? like is it 100% 80% , and what about the deductibles? All I hear is they want a Government health care system FOR ALL! Not talking about the MASSIVE COST!

Most European Health Care systems are "Free at the point of use", NOT FREE.

They are paid for by a system of taxation or compulsory universal insurance. They cost less than the US currently pays for health care per head. But there is a cost which takes into account the individual's ability to pay based on their income.

That's what those calling for universal health care in the States mean too--paid for through taxes, used as needed. Like other benefits, such as defense, are handled. The deplorable Trumpettes are just trying to use scare tactics to promulgate their hate.

I think Trump is doing a better job then the last 4 Presidents, so be a hater. But now can you help with what kind of coverage this "Medicare for all" is, I like what I have. I have Medicare A, B and D and a supplemental plan. 100% coverage, no deductibles $400 a month. Will these pathetic Democrats take that away? I would just LOVE! to hear someone like Kamala, or anyone who likes this plan, to tell me what's good about it. You talked about Taxes, so will we all pay more in Taxes to start with? Thanks for the comments, I thought so, that the Democrats would rise taxes to cover this, "Health care for all" that their not talking about. I know we will pay at the Doctors office as well. So I'm not crazy, their "Medicare for all" is BS! They have nothing to offer the American people. Just higher taxes , then still out of pocket cost.

Nothing is free, not even dying. You know all those FREE lunches served to children? They are paid for by taxes. Everything costs money, the money has to come from somewhere. It used to be that only children of certain low incomes would get the "free" lunch. But as more and more people fell into lower income brackets due to inflation and recessions, it got to a point where in many schools only a handful of children did not qualify. So many schools, especially in major inner city areas, decided it cost less money to feed everyone rather than pay for the clerks and paperwork to determine eligibility.

So, to me the questions are...what is the amount of taxes and costs of providing health care through medical and medicare and that of care for everyone? What would be the difference between the increase in taxes and the amount people are paying for health insurance? Since people are complaining about the out-of-pocket cost of health insurance under ACA, maybe it would actually cost less to make sure everyone has access to medical care or at least not much more. I don't know, someone has probably done that research somewhere. It would be interesting to see the numbers.

Medicare sucks. I have it. It isn't free to me. I have to pay for it and by itself, it's worthless. No Drs. in this area will take it if you don't have a supplement. And of course you pay for the supplement.

You're such a pessimist. The government could simply pay for health insurance policy for each person in the country. That's around 350m people at say 10k each (because they're buying in bulk).

YES! I am very pessimist the way some voted in the mid-terms. And your guessing it will cost our Government something like 350 million people, times 10 thousand us dollars. right ? per-year. Do the math. So what kind of COVERAGE WILL I GET ? unlike you, I know people will pay for this stupid idea. Our Government, and China will NOT! foot the cost of, OK! TILLIONS OF DOLLARS, like I said. Ok, calling in from Europe, and probably not the best at that, we're actually still slowly transitioning away from the soviet system in health care.

So, how it's like here.

1) Taxes. Fom every €100 employer pay out to have an employee working for them, €35 goes into state social budget (and it's not the end of it, employees get to actually spend just little over half of what employer is paying out, and then there's 21% VAT on top of that). It covers a lot of stuff, from state pensions and unemployment allowance to children benefits and the "free" health care. It's all in a single big mess.

2) The "free" health care cover emergency stuff, cancer diagnostics and some stuff like that, and "necessary" planned procedures you're able to wait, for undefined time. For example my dad waited cataract operation just short of two years, and was phoned, that the operation is available just before Christmas, less than two weeks prior. Yes, it spoiled some plans. At the given time it was fully covered (price tag listed was €800).

3) Then there's health insurance. Until recently it was meant to be bought only in bulk by employers as a bonus for employees. It's still rather inexpensive, depending from the plan €250 - €500 a year. You have to read the small print very carefully, it cover some stuff 100% some stuff 75% and so on, and there's lot of stuff it doesn't cover at all. It may or may not have yearly top limits, total, or on category by category (no limit plans are practically extinct now, however). Then you have to find doctor that works with your insurance company, but you can get discounts from the listed price (what matters if you have top limit you may actually reach).

Now there's talk to make some of this mandatory, and move all the "free" health care over here. Yes, that's expected to drive prices up and coverage down, and offer no hope the social tax will be actually reduced.

4) Then there's full cost capitalist medicine. It's expensive, but readily available on demand, and offer excellent service. Above mentioned cataract operation would go upwards of €900 most probably. (Actually there's spread €650-€1700 depending on materials used and so on.)

(For reference, minimum wage is €430/month, average around €1100, or actually more as it is deemed ~30% taxes are unpaid (undeclared cash wages, etc))

From my British perspective, I feel many Americans, mainly of a Republican persuasion are wrong headed as regards this issue. Why can't they see that a European free-at-the-point-of-use health care system would be good for capitalism. Currently many Americans feel they are one bad accident, such as a broken leg, away from financial ruin; if this was taken away then perhaps they'd be more inclined to buy that car, or that new fridge or whatever?

The assumption running through a lot of the posts in this thread is that we currently have a perfectly good system where, if you have insurance, a lot of stuff is covered for free or for a nominal fee; but if you replace that with Medicare For All, suddenly you're going to get a tax increase — so how can this possibly be a good deal?

But whether you pay higher taxes, or make a lower salary because your employer is docking you for the cost of your insurance: you're paying one way or another.

Medicare is deducted from every paycheck, and it's one of the most popular of all government programs.
