i just recently became aware of a technique being used by some of our more "prolific" contributors. it basically goes: write a story targeted for a certain section. then, change pronouns in the story, pop in appropriate prefab sex action, publish in another section. using basic pre-written building blocks you can change the action repeatedly so that you wind up publishing the same basic stories under a variety of headings.

i suppose if you're desperate for attention or crave seeing your name over and over it's a viable way to accomplish your goal. to me, it seems sleazy and self defeating.

any thoughts?

Sounds like someone adapted the techniques that starving artists bring to production line painting and applied it to literary endeavour.

My thoughts are that I concentrate on my own writing and don't worry much about what others are doing. I don't think it's a very meaningful way to be a writer, though.

It's difficult to evaluate this in the abstract. I've been reading stories here for 15 years and I can't think of any author whose stories quite match this description. There are some popular authors who work and rework certain tropes and situations, i.e., "son suddenly thinks mom is hot because [insert new reason]." But genre fiction in general works this way somewhat, and I wouldn't call it assembly line.

I like to see creativity and originality in a story, and I begin to get bored of an author if I feel the same ground is being retread too often. But there's a huge body of readers on this site who want to read the same basic story line over and over, and it's understandable that some authors would like to tap that audience.

This.

But you can’t lob a grenade and then not let it explode, OP. That’s just passive-aggressive cowardice. Either say who you mean or don’t bring it up. This is a discussion board, and all you’re doing is whining.

Doesn't concern me at all. Let them write what they want to write for whatever reason they write what they write, alright. :D

I'm quite happy writing my own stuff and watching everyone else do their thing. It's not a competition, there's room for all of us and readers on this site will read what they want to read.

I’m going to second this.🌹Kant.

i'm not interested in creating an attack thread which seems to be what you want. why don't you discuss the topic rather than try to start a disagreement? i'm not interested in satisfying your need to be disruptive, i'm asking how people feel about this method. obviously you have a problem staying on topic.

I'm with these guys. I like to focus on what I'm doing right, versus what I think others are doing wrong. We're not really getting paid here, so the writing is pretty much just self gratification.

I rarely read others' LIT writings. I can barely stand to read my own. Assemble elsewhere.

Not even remotely do I know what you’re talking about. I’ve never seen a story like what you’re describing.

But what’s there to discuss? Nobody who posts in the AH is likely to come in here and say, ā€œYeah! That’s a FANTASTIC way to create original content quickly!!!!ā€ What are you expecting here? We’re all going to say what we’ve said, a mix of, ā€œLet ā€˜em!ā€ and, ā€œWho cares?ā€ and, ā€œNot what I would do, but I focus on my own work.ā€

Why did you bring it up? You’re PLAINLY against this ā€œtechnique,ā€ as the end of your OP makes clear. Were you waiting for someone to out themself so that you could pounce? Because that seems to me to be the way you structured the thread.

So. Who are you talking about? Because, again, I’ve never seen anybody do this. Though I’ve seen many prolific authors who end up repeating themselves, but I’m not sure it’s a deliberate LEGO paint-by-numbers job. How are you sure?

Back in the day it was called dartboard writing. Zane grey was famous for it.

I strongly agree with this. This site is a big, big tent, with room for all kinds. As a reader if I find something I don't like I always have the "Do Not Read" option, and that takes care of pretty much everything and obviates my need to gripe.

I've gotta admit, this topic is wayyyy different than what I was expecting when I clicked the link.

Anyway, as was mentioned above, this is difficult to evaluate without more specifics. Are you complaining about somebody doing a formulaic or cut-paste approach to writing smut? At the end of the day, most stories (here and practically everywhere else) follow some sort of template. So while this could seem a bit hackish, templates are popular, and it seems to be working fine for the person you described.

Well I wouldn't get anything else done if I tried to read extensively here. But there are readers who have dozens or hundreds of favorites - and God bless them. If they drop a few of their "favorite hearts" on us then that's great.

I'll be honest with you, there are some categories where all the stories seem pretty much the same to me, so I'm not going to get too wound up about this.

I have no problem with assembly-line porn. I think that describes a lot of porn. I don't read it or watch it.

If you have a higher standard, then maybe porn isn't what you're trying to produce.

Being a visual person, when I first saw the thread title "Assembly Line Porn" I thought it concerned porn activity on an assembly line. That got my mind going about what that might involve. There are many possibilities.

Especially with robotics.

Porn is like a vibrator. Batteries not included, some assembly required.

Conceptually, my thoughts pretty much mirror what seems to be the general consensus in the "to each their own" type of way.

However, if there's something specific that anyone "should" be bothered about, then specific examples are probably needed.

I think of the doctored Disney cartoon with cheezes on the assembly line and Mickey Mouse turning them Swiss by fucking each wheel. Modernize that. Naked humans roll down the assembly line, fucked at stations along the way. POV: the plant manager, overseeing operations and maintaining quality. Hey you at H7, fuck harder! We have a quota!
