Did you see that a WDOK in Cleveland has banned the Christmas song “ Baby it;s cold outside” do to a complaint that this song is no longer appropriate in the era of the metoo movement. I’m attaching the lyrics. How do you feel? Is it inappropriate or an innocent flirty song from a by-gone era?
Are there other songs that should no longer be played?

Here it is:

really can't stay (but baby, it's cold outside)
I've got to go away (but baby, it's cold outside)
This evening has been (been hoping that you'd drop in)
So very nice (i'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)
My mother will start to worry (beautiful what's your hurry?)
My father will be pacing the floor (listen to the fireplace roar)
So really I'd better scurry (beautiful please don't hurry)
But maybe just a half a drink more (put some records on while I pour)
The neighbors might think (baby, it's bad out there)
Say what's in this drink? (no cabs to be had out there)
I wish I knew how (your eyes are like starlight now)
To break this spell (i'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)
I ought to say, no, no, no sir (mind if I move in closer?)
At least I'm gonna say that I tried (what's the sense in hurtin' my pride?)
I really can't stay (oh baby don't hold out)
But baby, it's cold outside
I simply must go (but baby, it's cold outside)
The answer is no (but baby, it's cold outside)
Your welcome has been(how lucky that you dropped in)
So nice and warm (look out the window at this dawn)
My sister will be suspicious (gosh your lips look delicious)
My brother will be there at the door (waves upon the tropical shore)
My maiden aunts mind is vicious (gosh your lips are delicious)
But maybe just a cigarette more (never such a blizzard before)
I've gotta get home(but baby, you'd freeze out there)
Say lend me a coat(it's up to your knees out there)
You've really been grand (i thrill when you touch my hand)
But don't you see? (how can you do this thing to me?)
There's bound to be talk tomorrow (think of my lifelong sorrow)
At least there will be plenty implied (if you got pnuemonia and died)
I really can't stay (get over that old out)
Baby, it's cold
Baby, it's cold outside

No song should be banned.
The only thing that needs to be banned is this new generation of whiny snowflakes that are easily offended

I get it. Looking at this song through 2018 eyes, it's easy to read anything you want into it. But the song was written in 1944, FFS. A different era altogether. Are we supposed to erase all history that makes us uncomfortable?

Both of the above comments are good ones.

*rolling my eyes*

This song was written in an era when if a young lady stayed or visited a gentleman's rooms, tongues would be wagging.

If you watch the movie or listen to the original song, it's clear she wanted to stay but was worried about her reputation.

As far as the drink, it had alcohol in it, not a date rape drug.

I thought we were "enlightened" in this day and age, but it seems some people have to much time on their hands and not enough common sense.

Seriously, we had Sting in the 80s "I'll be watching you" and, at an early time a song by Peggy March "I Will Follow Him" which are both much creepier than this. (Yes, I like the tunes to both).

I personally don't find the song offensive. Taken in context with the era it was written in it is completely innocent. There are many songs that are openly played on the radio that are much more disrespectful of women in my opinion. I find it hard to believe that the MAJORITY of people are honestly offended by this song. The few people that don't approve of it can just change the station for a moment when it comes on.

This. Acknowledging things that might be uncomfortable, or downright awful, in history is one thing. But erasing it is another.

Also, context matters. The song comes from an era where just a man and a woman being alone together could lead to wagging tongues. It's not that she's unwilling, she's worried about her reputation. Very, very different from a 'No means no' situation.

And finally, doesn't stuff like these complaints actually undermine a movement like MeToo? We're glazing over real issues and real misconduct by focusing on such petty and inconsequential minutiae. It makes actual claims of harassment look as manufactured as these complaints.

Well said.
I support the metoo movement. It is long over due. But at risk of appearing insensitive I don’t think we should ignore the natural tendencies of one person pursuing another. A song like this was written to depicte a playful “cat and mouse” scenario. But I think it is interesting discussion and may at the end of the day make us all more aware and sensitive to the issues of power plays going to far.

Excuse me? Not everyone in my generation are whiny snowflakes. Me personally, I don't find this song offensive. It's just a stupid song. So don't go judging a whole generation just because a few of the people can't deal with real life. And it's not like YOUR generation was perfect either!

Seconded!

I hate the "whiny snowflake millenials" talk. The fact is is that this new generation has an unbelievably bad deal and have to deal with so much crap.
Dying environment, fucked up government, mass shootings on a weekly basis, facism on the rise, etc. But they get called spoiled and whiny by baby boomers because, ya know, smart phones or whatever.

Yeah. But would you ban the song? You got a little distracted there.

This first part. Absolutely.
Nothing should ever be banned.
That being said, I called this song The Date Rape song long before #metoo, and I’ll change the station if it comes on.
