It all starts with a a presumption of courtesy. When one party to the interaction deviates from that there's no obligation to remain courteous, especially when the president not only is discourteous to the press, congress and the American people, but also to the office of the president.
If he wants people to be courteous to him he needs to show he deserves it.

For the most part the press has not been contradicting him to his face for most of his term, only reporting it and reporting the actual facts of the topic. What we've ended up with is a substantial proportion of the populace that believes the lies he tells.

It's way past time for the press to call the president on the lies, and I hope they continue the trend. In perpetuity.

The Obama administration only separated families when th adults were arrested for a criminal offense that would be criminal for anyone in the US.
The result was very few, comparatively, families were separated because, as a percentage, few illegal immigrants commit crimes in the US.

Trump chose, unlike Obama, to intentionally incarcerate adults traveling with their kids so the families would be separated, in order to deter entry to the US. Sessions even said that was the reason.

Had the Senate passed bi-partisan bill been taken up in the House, S.744 - Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, the caravan would have been facing a different legal landscape, more and higher fences, increased numbers of border agents, requirements for submission to biometric identification, prevention of entry until identity can be established, changes to the petitioning of refugee status etc, etc :

(Sec. 3718) Directs the Secretary of State, upon notification from the Secretary, to prohibit visas to be granted to persons of a country whose government denies or unreasonably delays accepting their citizens, subjects, nationals, or residents back.

Requires every alien applying for U.S. admission to submit to biographic and biometric screening to determine whether the alien's name or biometric information is listed in any U.S. terrorist watch list or database.

Makes an RPI alien ineligible for any federal means-tested benefit, and considers such person to be a noncitizen for certain other federal benefits.

Makes a blue card alien ineligible for any federal means-tested benefit.

(Sec. 1203) Requires the Secretary of State to develop, in consultation with Congress, a strategy to address the unauthorized immigration of individuals who transit through Mexico to the United States, to include specific steps to: (1) enhance training, resources and professionalism of border and law enforcement officials in Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and other countries, as appropriate; and (2) educate nationals of such countries about the perils of the journey to the United States.

(Sec. 4417) Amends title XIX (Medicaid) of the Social Security Act to deny eligibility for medical assistance to B visa (visitors) and F visa (students) nonimmigrants. Requires the Secretaries of HHS and the Treasury to conform all regulations relating to eligibility for health-related programs that they administer to reflect amendments to the definition of "lawfully residing" made by this Act.

Directs: (1) the Comptroller General (GAO) to review the Secretary's methods of tracking entering and exiting aliens and detecting overstays, and (2) the Secretary to evaluate the security risks of aliens entering the United States without an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization verification.

(Sec. 1103) Authorizes the governor of a state, with the approval of the Secretary of Defense (DOD), to order National Guard units or personnel to perform operations in the Southwest border region to assist CBP in securing the southern border. Directs DOD to provide material and logistical assistance as needed.

Directs the Secretary to enhance border infrastructure by: (1) constructing additional Border Patrol stations in the Southwest border region, (2) upgrading and establishing additional Border Patrol operating bases, and (3) establishing a grant program with the Secretary of Transportation (DOT) to construct transportation improvements at international border crossings. Authorizes FY2014-FY2018 appropriations.

Requires an alien applicant to satisfy federal tax liabilities and security and law enforcement clearances.
