I think the competition is already waning, at least it is this side of the pond... I have achieved more than I ever expected in a very male dominated career specifically because other women made it their business to support me. I am lucky to now be in a position to start paying that forward...
But the body hate is likely to be a long time coming. I think one of the most tragic things we are seeing is a move towards gender equality in that respect but only because men and boys are suffering the same crippling self loathing that seems to have been predominantly female historically...
It doesn’t help that children of course learn from us... I was on the tube some months back when a little dot of a beautiful Asian girl piped up something to the effect of “mum, why do you always say you’re fat when you’re not fat”. Very embarrassed normal weight mum tried to shush her while she asked the question again... it’s now perfectly normal for kids to grow up with the idea of mum being permanently on a diet... or skipping something scrummy because she’s trying to be ‘good’... or to openly despise perfectly normal flesh and curves... and then they copy us...
Change starts with us
