I've seen some people asking this question: why is Kavanaugh seemingly so obsessed with promoting this image of himself as having been some sort of saintly figure as a teenager/young man, when there's so much evidence that he was your basic prep school asshole? It's not as if it would be political death for him if he said, "Look, I was a jerk as a kid, probably didn't show enough respect to girls, definitely had an issue with binge drinking, but I'm a changed man and my professional career proves it." It's not like most people would find that disqualifying. Hell, George W. Bush built a career on that narrative.

People have said, "OK, he might have done some naughty things in his youth, but he outgrew all that." Thing is though, he's not admitting to any of it, let alone apologizing for it. He's not even admitting to obvious stuff like the slut-shaming of the girl in the yearbook, or that he drank a lot back in the day, something even his old friends suggest was his most notable personality trait.

You can say that his character as a teenager isn't relevant to his fitness for being on the Court now, but his honesty today is obviously highly relevant.

Unless there's something that comes out (and maybe it will; there are law office atmospheric issues that have popped up) from his professional life, the "been there; it appalled me; it's why I've fought against it ever since" approach would have worked, I think. What they get him on is what the lying and stonewalling reveals of his current character.

And if Susan Collins thinks his assurances to her that he'd leave Roe vs. Wade alone are genuine and mean anything she's either as dumb as she was when she was bamboozled over the tax bill or she's as much a "training to win on both sides" hypocrite as any of her Republican colleagues are.

After the Swetnick affidavit was released, I asked Judge’s attorney for Judge’s response and whether he would return to Washington and make himself available to any investigators who might want to examine these latest allegations against Kavanaugh.

“He is denying the allegations in the Swetnick affidavit,” Van Gelder replied, “and not publicly talking about these matters during the pendency of the confirmation hearings.” She then amended her statement to “during the pendency of the confirmation process.” Meaning Judge won’t say anything until it can no longer have any bearing on whether Kavanaugh is confirmed.
