The apparent enslavement is because the Germans buy some of their natural gas supplies from Russia. It is delivered by a pipeline and Russia could turn off supplies at any time.

But why would they? They need the currency earnings.

If Russia did stop supplies it would be awkward for Germany but not disastrous because Germany could buy on the open market. What they get from Russia is substantial but nothing like the percentages quoted in some US media. It might be 37% but could become more when a new pipeline is built.

Other European countries also buy natural gas from Russia. Why?

Because Russia supplies it at a cheap rate.
