I was a cowboy. I grew up on a family ranch and the first paying job I had (outside of working our own ranch) was what is called a "line rider" for a larger ranch nearby.

I would get up in the morning, saddle my horse, load my gear and then spend all day riding (and repairing) fence, checking water (windmills, ponds, pumps), and feed (height and condition of grass) and cows (count them, look for sick ones, make sure they're all healthy), along with any other duties as assigned. For this I was paid the grand sum of 500.00 a month and found (found means room, board, equipment, etc.).
