man i came across this on facebook and thought it was right on the money. please let me know if you do too, lol ;)

I would never ever presume to write with authority on something I know nothing about. I worked in agricultural accounting and HR for 12 years, and for a fruit sales company (ag accounting) for 4 years prior to that. As such, I was on the front lines of the hiring practices of the large scale growing operation I worked for. For much of the year we employed at least 500 field workers. For the purpose of my input, kindly believe that I never meant nor will I ever mean to insult or degrade the honest, hardworking family farmer just trying, against ever increasing odds, to survive. I was and am talking about literal “fat cat” corporate growers such as the one I worked for.

In my 12 years, I can safely say that 100% of our field workers were undocumented. They were also either completely illiterate (as in writing their name with an “X”), or functionally illiterate (very limited reading and writing skills and only in Spanish). As such they would never be able to even begin to navigate the labyrinth of procedural requirements to enter America “legally”. But here’s where it gets even murkier: They are exploited left and right by ‘Coyotes’ who take their money and pretend they are ensuring legal entry into the US. These undocumented workers are not criminals; they are uneducated desperate people being abused every step of the way. Once in my workplace, they presented requested documents that were, for the most part, obviously altered.... badly.

Many of the social security cards were handwritten over clumps of whiteout. Most were typed over clumps of whiteout. These documents were universally purchased at swap meets for exorbitant prices, and came complete with the golden lie that the buyer was now “legal”. There also is an organization literally devoted to helping growers cheat the system and continue to become ever wealthier off the backs of illiterate and perpetually deceived lambs to slaughter. I was instructed on what documents to shred... Growers of any scale and size of operation can do little to police the work force, but it is naive to think for one minute that any grower of any size is oblivious to the fact that they must rely on undocumented workers. Which is fine and dandy and even understandable — until it comes time to defend these poor people and advocate for the truth about the alliance between them and their employers. Farmers who remain silent as this savage border atrocity behavior continues and who, out of one side of their mouth agree with the politics that create and promote such horror — while the other side of their mouth continue the hiring practices that entice undocumented and desperate people to continue to flood into America — are despicable.

Every farmer and grower of any size who is not standing up for the demographic of people on whom the farmer/grower relies to survive and thrive... is a shameful hypocrite. “Pretending” (even in one’s own mind) that their crop is being picked by fully fledged documented workers is ridiculous and everyone in the industry knows it.

I am just pleading for full truth.

Why did I work there? Why did I stay so long? Let me answer by saying that if I was the knowledgeable and strong person I am today, I would have done things differently. But I was not the knowledgable and strong person I am today, and as the light slowly illuminated what I was a part of, I amped up my already fierce devotion to our field workers and did my best until I could get out of there.
To treat vulnerable people as criminals, and use their children as weapons of punishment and “deterrence” while continuing to employ them and garner ever more wealth as a result.... is the most reprehensible hypocrisy imaginable.

It's BS.

Many migrant workers are legit with work visas or are legal immigrants. The farms contract with labor companies who supply/pay the workers (like temp help agencies do). The contracting company has to verify that the workers are legally allowed to be here and work.

Yes, some manage to make it through the employment check system with documents that appear to be legal because the labor contracting company doesn't do much more than look to see if the applicant has a work visa. But, like I said, the majority of field hands and migrant laborers are legally here and legally allowed to work here.

Saying that 100% are illegal, is total BS. Thus, the rest of the article can be dismissed as either inaccurate or just plain BS too.

Does this actually make sense to anyone other than the OP? Seriously, does it?

First, I don't think that word means what you think it means.

Second, so speaketh the volumes of Lit members who have posted to say they understand what your comment.

It does suck to be me. I never claimed to be good. Or nice. Or gentle. Of the few things I have made claims about here on Lit, every single one of them has been true.

And then there's the obviously false BS you post.

The truth is that most illegals are forced to work, off the books, for the wealthy elites or for substandard wages at mom and pop establishments. Anyone big won't touch them (other than the possible exception of the meat-packing industry which has a very high turnover rate).

Luk,

Just pay your workers what they deserve.

Also, get off fakebook and pray that the soil and pitiful foliage you have charged big bucks for holds. This rainy season in Cali may make or break you. Ha.

Robotic fruit picking machines will replace the luks.

Bonus: Robots don’t get psych and neuro disabilities.

But do they suffer fire and flood and the Formidable Fermina?

Bot nots or not bots? A question for all of humanity.
