Geek Pride Day! Official Support Thread

It's done. 17,433 words. How the Hell did I do THAT?

I'll probably fiddle with it a bit more. Tweak it here and there. That's what I do. But the story itself is done.

Would anyone be interested in beta reading it for me?

None of my regular betas are into Sci-Fi. I'd be happy to return the favor and beta read yours. In fact there are so many stories in this anthology that I am looking forward to, I'd actually appreciate the chance to get a head start on some of them. Let me know if you're interested in trading.

And thanks to everyone in this thread for their support and encouragement. This story never would have happened without PuckIt and his idea.

Congratulations, Loqui!! :D

Wow, 17K! You're story is going to be longer than mine! Although (as usual), I misjudged my estimated word count. I just hit 8K this morning, and still have the climax and resolution to go. So...11K. That's my new estimate. (Somehow I hear my "regular readers laughing hysterically even from over here... ) Although this only being the third day working on it, that's pretty good. :D

I would be interested in swapping (oooh, yeahhhh...), if you can give me a little longer to finish up. :) Assuming you can tolerate furry stories and don't mind men in kilts. :cattail:

Or, if that's not at all appealing, I'll just beta read for you. :D

Again, congrats on your longest story, ever, and all that math I'm looking forward to diving into! I agree and know the feeling--some stories just never come into being without the right push and reason to focus and "git 'er done" attitude.

Huzzah!

Good job! I'm up to 13,300 and hoping to finish this weekend. Probably will end up 18,000-20,000, which would make it my longest story yet.

Sounds good Etaski, but I'd hate it if reading my story distracted your from writing yours. I'll PM you and we'll see what we can work out.

That's great, SD! Wow, something about PuckIt's idea really inspires the verbosity in people.

Gotta finish up some of the “real” reading I’m doing. I need to clear the decks to check out these Geek Day submissions.

Keep it up, gang. I hope May the Fourth treated all of you well.

And 7 hours later, I catch up with Loqui. :D At least the "first draft." Still. Finished! So now we can swap!

I'm a liiittle over my second estimate, 12K words. Maybe 12,5-13K by the time I groom and edit. Still a shorter story for me. Happy to have something to contribute! I didn't think I would.

And yay, Simon, already past my word count in a short time, and closing on your own finish! :) I agree, something about encouraging Geeks to get freaky must bring out the word count...

I need to let my brain un-fry and decompress (if those two processes can even happen at the same time), but I'll be sure to recompile The List soon. :)

Me, too. Happily, May 25th is the day before Memorial Weekend (3-day holiday) in the States, so there's some built-in free-time perfectly timed for me! :D

Keep it up, gang. I hope May the Fourth treated all of you well.
I helped someone move yesterday, but the weather was good, nothing got broken, and no injuries. Ergo, today was not Revenge of the Fifth. :D

I'm in

Heh, I guess that's my cue. :D

In Order of Appearance:

(22K and counting, "not quite so economical as only now are we getting down to business". Don't worry, EB66, the readers really do like world building so long as it's not an "infodump." And I know you're experienced enough to know what that is.)

Blind_Justice (50K+ and counting. I like "Eventually Marooned on Gorgon IX" as a title, but the piece is not quite satiricle/humorous enough to get away with it. Equal measures Mass Effect, Guardians of the Galaxy, Babylon 5, and Firefly. Except, fuck, and now young Ridley Scott and young James Cameron inspirations are seeping into my glass, turning the nuclear-blue color a disturbingly familiar color of green. Indiana Jones had the right line in "Ark of the Convenant." Minimal application of the whip has been needed; he's been doin' good! :D

lovecraft68

ChloeTzang (John Ringo/ e e doc smith but a version where the Chinese are doing the heavy lifting. Note: the name of the ship is NOT the SLAP Happiness. Addendum: Slight detour to 3K words on antiquity puns with so many cleverness modifiers, it broke my d20.)

Voboy (FIRST FINISHED! Quote the author: 21K words, and yes, it includes penetrative sex with an alien who has a prehensile penis and can cum on order.") Apparently the Prehen-Penis' owner can also do so "vengefully." :D Oh, the image.

YouDidWhut - Alas, must bow out. Computer went down and understandably not typing a 10K+ word story on a phone. (I mean, come on, he's not E.L. James!)

xelliebabex - Finished and uploaded to drafts on the site. Its a 30K fantasy of Dukes, knights and n'er-do-wells with a virginal goddess of a woman thrown in to make it work :p

Something about cherry-fuck!-flavored consentacles

I'm contemplating adding a "furry" story to the mix, but need the time to work on it. It would also involve a young man in a kilt because...

Kilt! :rose::kiss:

I updated the line with my name! So excited I finished early rather than rushing for deadlines as usual. Not so excited that I broke my foot and had nothing else to do but write and edit :)
Good luck getting them done everyone!

Time to update!

Okay! *mad scribbles*

FINISHED, just shy of 34K words. Sequel set up for next year (Awarded "most ambitious geek" on the spot).

Blind_Justice Revenge of the Allergies means he's been beta-reading Etaski's stuff until those hyperactive T-cells simmer down a little! (Etaski's note: I think he just did my second draft for me...pretty good for a guy on meds! I'm taking it that he liked it enough to compulsively polish it.)

: They haven't visited the forum yet, but they piped up on the official announcement and I'm really hoping we see something from these guys! All longtime veterans to the category.

Etaski:: Confirmed entry at long-last, first draft finished 3 days later, 12K words. A dose of obscure but quintessential '90's RPG (think "The Crow" meets "Deadpool" and they got stuck in a corporate meeting together). Between a Fuzzy and a man in a kilt.

My entry will be far shorter than most of yours. :( Hope it doesn't come off as cheap.

It's around 6,000 words, and about a Sorceress who, erm, does some "field study" with some Orcs. It'll have some un-translated fantasy language, many a penis, and a ridiculously powerful woman who just can't help herself to what she sees. Good times.

On the home stretch. Nearly 17K words. A few more pages and tentacles to go and I'll be done. Then comes time for revision, editing, and proofing.

Yay! Another finished! :D

Not at all! There are plenty who haven't even said anything about their story, could be several other shorter ones in the mix. Some of us are just pathetically verbose. ;)
Many of my favorite "go-to/rereads" are the shorter ones. There's room for all of it! :D

Good times, indeed! I enjoy orc sex stories, especially "beauty and the beast" twists. :D Regular fapping material. Looking forward to a new one to check out, and many thanks for popping in to give us a hint!

A few more pages and tentacles to go and I'll be done.
Congrats, and, "a few more tentacles to go." Hahahaha! :D

Yeah, my last revision plumped things up from 12K to 13,5K. Hrm. I'm going to be working on other stuff for a week and not look at it so I can refresh my eyes. But it's 95% complete, I think, and had some fun responses from Loqui and Blind_Justice, so I can be satisfied with this when all's said and done.

Ohh!! And Loqui's entry! :D Based on the hints he's given us so far: *two thumbs way up!" I cannot imagine a better hard-sci-fi, math-nerd Geek Pride story, to be honest. Good work!

Hey, thanks so much, Etaski! That's very kind of you. Your story of corporate dystopia is classic CyberPunk. A great mix of sex, violence, drugs, and betrayal. This is shaping up to be one hell of an anthology.

WhimsicalRepertoire, I'm definitely a fan of short-and-sweet stories, so yours is going to be on my must-read list.

First draft done. Three words shy of 20K. Plenty of editing and proofing still to be done, but I can lay to rest my fear that yet another contest deadline would pass with my story still incomplete.

This is a great contest idea, because everyone will be submitting in the same category. It will be fun to see what others come up with. I've had a blast writing this one (no moms and no sons involved -- yay!). My first sci fi story.

I'm still alive, I'm still writing - even if the story I'll be submitting will look quite a bit different from the one I had planned. Let's just say life got in the way (again) and I needed to make some drastic adjustments. But there's no chance in Hell I'll pass up the amount of extra eyeballs on my stuff.

Back to writing.

Two very happy updates!

Congratulations, Simon! :nana:

And B_J, I don't think it looks that different. :D In a way, it's the story you promised at the beginning of the novel. You just aren't used to keeping those promises and moving in a more direct path, are you? Hehe! Well, I think the characters you've created deserve to see the Geek Day, so I'm so glad things are back on track!

I guess this beckons a few important reminders from the OP:

1) Submit during the week between 15 May and 22 May, in the Sci-Fi & Fantasy Category.

2) "Geek Pride!" should be in the Notes Field for intended submissions. Failure to do so will mean not being included in the submissions intended for that date.

3) Use the tag Geek Pride for one of the ten available tags on the submission.

Lovely story challenge, thanks.

I do believe I'm done. Two different spell check programs and three read through edits have it as close to complete as I can make a story.

I used my Camp NaNoWriMo in April to write this "little" story.

I hope it's enjoyable.

Ready to be done with it, I have other things waiting in the wings that had to be put on hold.

:rose:

I'm going to change up The List a little, so close to sub time. :)

PuckIt; Oye. Etaski's note: I think my calling him Captain Chaos a few too many times prompted one of those weird storms to come wending its way in. Hang in there, Puck. A lot of good stories are coming out of this. :rose:

First: Writers Confirmed to Proffer Their Wares Upon the Altar of Geekdom:

Voboy, 21K words. Leaning Sci-Fi, but I am guessing from "prehensile penis cumming vengefully"

weftandwarp 10K words, only clue word is "botany," which could be either Sci-Fi or Fantasy, so...surprise!

electricblue66, 34K words. Actually don't know which side of the fence this ony falls upon, *ahem* but interested in finding out. :D :rose:

xelliebabex, 30K words, Fantasy Scoundrels with Virgin Princess (yow-wow)

LoquiSordidaAdMe, 17K words, Hard Science Fiction. No magic or crazy tech. Great story, and the sock comment is now explained. I loved it!

SimonDoom: 20K words, Sci-Fi, Tentacles

Etaski:: 13K words, Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk/Paranoia blend, Combat Highlander Meets Furry.

Whimsical Repertoire: 6K words, Fantasy, Strange Beauty Visits Orcs (gimme!!)

yowser: "Short, intense, cerebral" Fantasy, Demonic/medieval theme. A dark horse! Thanks for giving the thread a shout!

MSTarot: YES! Thank you so much! We're getting a Pirate story!

That's TEN stories that we know about. :nana:

Second: In-Progress Stories Sincerely Craved. Whatcha think, is it looking Real?

Blind_Justice: Sci-Fi/Alien Adventures. Etaski's note: I know he's in the throes of the finale. I've lost track of the word count, but I'm enjoying it. Good chance of finishing. Might be our only novella-length?

Alice_Rosaleen: Sci-Fi, Gibsonesque Cyberpunk, AI.

9 Days to Submit, 12 until we get to Geek Out!

So we start submitting Tuesday, yeah? Me being ahead of you Yankee jokers by a day, it being Monday early arvo as I write this.

Yeah! :D

Start submitting Tuesday, May 15th. Final submissions by Tuesday, May 22.

Geek Pride in both Notes Field and as a Tag. We can use the Tag to easily find you all.

@Etaski: 44k words. When I'm done, it will be around 50k or so.
Marvelous!! Even with the splitting of the tale for an automatic sequel later (which I think you said was 24K words even then? Never mind the ideas you already have to expand it), this is looking like the highest word count submission (at least, that I know about). That's going to be 75K words since you began! Congrats! :rose:

I had a thought this morning of collecting the final list of the stories which go live and making a post here, giving links directly to them. It would make it easy for us all to reference it to others with a link in various places, to guide readers to the full spectrum of Geek Pride. Links on one's Author Bio page, the comments section of your story, any social media you use...

Easy enough to do.

And ...done. 53.092 words. Epic boss fight. Hot final sex scene. Bumper plate ending.

With edit time to spare.
